SPECIAL EDITION EMERGENCY ENTRY

This is a special entry. I was not going to do another entry until Thursday, but I felt this one was necessary.

First I would like to say that I am very disappointed that I even have to write this.
It seems that some people do not understand the purpose of this blog, or blogs in general.
This blog in particular is intended to be about me, and my struggles as a 40+ boxer trying to make a comeback. It is not for getting anyone in trouble or upsetting anyone.
I am a journalist, and it is my intent to report my experiences, as accurate as possible. I am not perfect, so if I ever publish something that is inaccurate or offensive to you, I can't fix it unless you let me know. Message me, email me, leave a comment.
Sometimes I "complain" a bit. That is true. That is because of my background in broadcasting, I have learned that the best way to get something done is to complain in public. My complaints are intended to help people and improve service for everyone.

Now let me get to why I have published this special entry.
This evening, I found out that Kobe is pissed off at me because he apparently got in crap over something that I published here last week.
The comment about his "dancing" class. Well, come on. I thought that was kind of humorous.
Kobe gave me crap in the locker room, which I did not really appreciate. He said, "I don't exist". In other words, he does not want to be mentioned in the blog.
Well, I'm sorry, you do exist. You are part of my training which is an important part of this blog.
Also, it is wrong to approach me about this in front of the other members. I would have been happy to accommodate his concerns otherwise.

Like I said, it is never my intent to upset anyone.

It is like with my last entry about the music. I don't want to go in on Thursday, or any other day, and hear that somebody got in trouble just because I commented about the music.
This was intended to help everyone. Although, I do not believe in having music in the gym, does not mean that nobody else should. My only request is that it not be to obnoxious or loud. I don't want to hear the "N-word" over and over, it is offensive. Also, I don't want the music so loud that I have to yell to talk to the person next to me. Neither of these is an unreasonable request. Besides, I may not be the only one bothered by it. I have heard of people who  cancel their gym memberships just because of the music. It is true. I simply want to make things better, and possibly prevent people from leaving the gym.

If Kobe is concerned about what I am posting here, then maybe I should not attend his classes any more. I just don't feel comfortable.
I am definitely removing his Tuesday class from my training schedule. I will either go to Bloor after his class, or attend Junmar's class at Stockyards.
I still like the Thursday sparring, so I may still go to that one until the end of September. After that, I don't know. I think this will be the best thing to do in the short-term anyway. I am getting plenty of sparring at Stockyards.
I also don't know whether this will eventually result in a cancellation of my Bloor membership. After all, I can do the majority of my training at Stockyards.

I stay at Bloor Boxing because I like it. It is not just because of the hours. After all, I can always adjust my schedule. I go there because of the people. I like most of the other members, and I like the staff and the management. Otherwise, I do not need two gym memberships.

Anyway, as you can understand, I had to get this out.
I will still have an entry near the end of the week, which I am hoping to get some video of the sparring at Stockyards.

The Second-Round Stretch

Hello all.

Here is this week's report.

Last Wednesday, I did three rounds of sparring at Stockyards.
After, Richard wanted me to do Junmar's fitness class. In addition, I did 100 push-ups and 100 sit-ups, plus four rounds of heavy bag and two rounds on the speed bag.
I was quite impressed with myself. Some of the younger guys can't do that.
Anyway, I guess this means I have to do his class every Wednesday now.

On Thursday it was technical sparring at Bloor. Kobe did not change the class to a dance class like he said he would. There was a lot of sparring, and only sparring.
I hate to do this, but I am ready to start complaining about the music. There is always some ass there who plays music 'way too loud, and it is not even good music. The problem is, I am trying to do some serious training, and I can't concentrate when I can't even hear myself think.
At least a Stockyards, the music is "decent" and not that loud. Its there, but not intrusive.
When I first started boxing 20 years ago, music was not even allowed in the boxing gym. Do we really need it?

On Monday, I did sparring at Stockyards. Richard was not there, so Junmar was in charge.
He only let me do two rounds of sparring, where Rick lets me do three. I was not feeling well, so it was possible that Junmar noticed that, and that is why he pulled me out early.
My goal is to be able to go four rounds without a break. Right now I can almost go three. The thing is, I have to keep pushing myself. If I quit after two rounds, I will never meet my four-round goal.
Although, the Master's division are only one and a half minute rounds, for me to be able to go almost three -three minute rounds is pretty good. My goal of four is quite a reasonable goal.
Even if the younger guys can go five or six, I don't really see the need for myself to ever need that.

Right now, I am doing three classes a week, two sessions of hard sparring and one session of technical sparring. On weekends, I do my own training at Bloor Boxing. I really only take Friday off, but even then, I usually go swimming on Fridays. That means that I am doing some kind of physical activity every day of the week.
I have to say that is very impressive for someone my age. I am challenging everyone to do the same.

Playing HOOKy and Sparring and Dancing?

It has been an interesting week so far.
Interesting news from Kobe, and Richard is pissed with me again.

First, news from Bloor Boxing. Kobe is talking about doing something that he calls a combination of boxing and dancing in his sparring classes. Let me start by saying, 'no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no'. I can't believe he wants to screw up that class. If he wants to do that, fine, but don't mess with my Thursday evening technical sparring.
I am a serious boxer, and there is no freaking way I am going to be doing anything that comes close to resembling Boxercise. This isn't Riverdance.
I really hope he is kidding about that.

While I am on the topic of Thursday's technical sparring, this past class, he did not do the whole class of sparring. On this class the men were outnumbered by women. I have found that, in general, women do not like to spar. They will do a boxing class, but don't like to be hit.
I had a girl opponent once during that class. I don't hit the girls nearly as hard as the guys, but she was saying, "Don't hit me...Don't hit me." Excuse me? Don't hit me? What the hell are you doing in boxing class? I mean even if she does not want to spar, there is still some technical boxing. That is why it is called a boxing class.
I think this may be why he wants to add the Boxercise. To attract more females. Well, I really hate to say this, but Toronto has women's only fitness clubs coming out the Yin-Yang. Men need a few fitness classes of our own.
Kobe, please do not change that class, because I will stop going.

I had sparring with Justin at Stockyards today. Rick was on my case as usual about throwing more combinations. He was complaining about my hooks. He wants me to practice hooks. He hates my hooks. Yeah, well, Richard, the feeling is mutual, I hate my hooks too. Those damn hooks. Whoever invented hooks is an idiot. If I could get away with boxing without them, I would.
Now I have to spend three round on the bag every day working on the stupid hooks.

There was also a "new guy" at Stockyards. He did not say his name, so Rick just calls him "New Guy". He is my age and weightclass. He has apparently been boxing for a while, and has 21 bouts under his belt.
I would like to spar him. He did a couple with Justin, and I noticed he was making a lot of mistakes. He has terrible defence. For a guy with 21 bouts, it isn't very acceptable. Then again, he wouldn't say how well he did for those 21 bouts. I mean, maybe he lost 20.
I'd kind of like to remind him how to defend himself. I'm sure that after getting nailed a few times, he will remember.
Yeah, I know it sounds nasty, but that is how I learned. You know what they say, "No love in this glove".
It happened to me today, while sparring Justin. I have already told you how hard he hits. Well, Richard decided to yell out an instruction to me during the round, and I turned to look at him. Boom! Justin nailed me! Then Richard said, "Don't look at me, Brick. You will get nailed."
Yeah, thanks Rick.

What else is happening:

Congrats to Junmar Emon. He has won his second professional match this past Saturday at the Hershey Centre, and is now 2 - 0.

Bloor Boxing is having live boxing on September 15. Tickets are on sale at the front desk, 2295 Dundas Street West.

Excusez-moi?

Boom! Justin m'a cloué! Puis Richard a dit: «Ne me regarde pas, Brick. Vous serez cloué.»
Oui, merci Rick.

Being A Boxer Isn't Always A Good Thing...

Hello all.

I would like to start off by saying that I really appreciate how the High Park/Junction community has been supporting me.
I get "high fives" and "thumbs up" from complete strangers, and when I do my jog around Runnymede Park, people say "hi" to me.
That is great. After all, it takes a lot of balls to do what I am doing.
However, not everyone is supportive.

As you may or may not know, I have been a victim of the collapsing economy. The job that I had been dong for almost seven years, has been eliminated.
Therefore, since May, I have not been full-time employed. I do get "odd jobs" here and there, but nothing significant.
I have been applying for the same type of work I have been doing all this time, and nobody is interested. I even give them a kick-ass interview. You know, the type of interview when you know you will be hired. They end up giving me some dumb excuse.
I even had one person say, "You don't fit our organization..." Oh, well, excuse me, King.

I think some of this might have to do with the fact that I am a boxer, Unfortunately, they see that "Boxer" label, and automatically disqualify me for any job that might require the slightest use of brain cells.
I am surprised that there are people who still think that way. I mean, boxing is just a sport. It is my recreation. I can still do other things, you know?

I have noticed that a lot of my boxer friends have jobs like, security, doorman, bouncer... Seriously.
Well, that's fine. These are my friends, so I am not going to put down their jobs. If that is what I am going to have to do to earn any money, I will. However, I still want to try other jobs as well. I mean, 'boxer' does not mean "stupid".
If I have to go into security for example, that's fine, but I heard that it is really boring. You basically just walk around the property and report anything that goes wrong. Really? How often does something go "wrong"? Even then, you can't fix it yourself. You have to call someone. After all, you are just a dumb security guard / boxer or wrestler, or whatever, and you don't have the brain power to try to fix something yourself.

The TTC is hiring operators. Someone suggested that I apply for a job as a bus driver. Yeah. Can you imagine me as a bus driver in Toronto?
At least people would listen to me. "Okay, everyone, shut up and sit down, before I knock you down!"
Hmmm...
Besides, what other company allows their employees to sleep on the job, and take extra-long breaks?

I have also considered running for mayor. Why not? Enough people know me. The only problem with that is I don't really know that much about running a city.
Then again, Rob Ford managed to get elected...

Someone else suggested police officer, but I don't qualify for that, either. I don't have enough experience at being a pain in the ass.

I find it odd that I can't even get a job at a gym. I have applied at some fitness centres, and they won't hire, because I am not certified in (a) CPR, and (b) CanFit.
Okay, well, CPR Certification costs $150 and CanFit Certification costs $480.
With CanFit, most fitness centres require all employees who interact with the members to have CanFit Certification, even if you are not a personal trainer. Reason: In case you give incorrect advise to a member.
How the hell can someone give inaccurate advice to a fitness member? "Yeah, here is some advice to stay healthy: Quit the gym, plant your butt on the sofa and eat lots of junk." Oops, I think that was wrong. Damn, I wish I was certified...
Let me explain it to you this way: I am not employed, therefore I do not have much money, and certifications cost money. Do you see where I am going with this?
I don't mind getting a certification if it means getting work, but I am not going to invest in it "just in case", because with the way things work with me, "just in case" never happens.

Speaking of things that never happen, my physician has refused to sign my medical forms for Boxing Ontario re-certification. He apparently "does not fill out forms for athletes". I really don't see why this can't be done by a general physician? He is sending me to a Specialist of Sports Medicine, downtown.  Don't those specialize in sports injuries? I don't think they do examinations for athletes. Then again, what do I know? I'm just a dumb boxer.
My physician was very nice about it. He forwarded all the forms and information to that doctor. The only problem is, that doctor is away until the middle of September. Yeah, another delay. It looks like I will not be having an exhibition in September, maybe I'll try for October.
However, Boxing Ontario works like the government. It takes them four times longer to do anything than it really needs. Even once that other doctor approves my re-cert, it is going to take Boxing Ontario a couple-thousand years to process it.
I have a feeling that this other doctor is not going to do it, and I will end up having to tell my physician to take a hike and find another. It is very difficult to find a good physician in Toronto that is excepting new patients.
I figure that by the time all this is done, I may be able to have my exhibition by December...2017.

To sum up today's blog entry: Shit.

All About Combos, Not the Snack

Welcome to this week's report. I will be discussing sparring (3 sessions this week), and the report from my coaches. Both had interesting things to say this week.

I had sparring on Monday and Wednesday at Stockyards Boxing Gym with Coach Richard, and the usual Thursday Technical Sparring at Bloor Boxing with Kobe.
I think I discussed having two coaches before. I have different coaches now, and it can sometimes be difficult since each coach has a different style of teaching. However, in my case, I am taking advantage of it. I can take a bit away from both and put it all together. I think I can make it work, and become a kick-ass boxer.
I can remember being a part of the Martial Arts Forum, and having a discussion with someone over coaching. There are people out there who believe in not listening to the coach. Seriously? I found this rather odd.
Why would an athlete have such a relationship with his coach? A good coach would not instruct you to do something unless it was good for you.
That is why I don't visit Internet forums too much any more. Too many stupid threads.
I have a good relationship with my coaches, especially Richard. Any time someone wants me to recommend a boxing coach, it is always Richard...'Richard Souce'...'Richard Souce'...'Richard Souce'.
I have to say he is the absolute best certified coach in Toronto. If he tells me to go down to the subway and kiss the third rail, I would do it if it would improve my boxing. I mean, the better the athletes are, the better the coach looks as well.
Believe me, I know a good coach when I see one.  I have had a chronic case of Crappycoachitis for five years. It is nice to finally have coaches that care about me. The last thing I want to do is get into that ring and make them look like asses.

That being said, Richard was a bit disappointed with my performance this week, and as always he was right.
After sparring on Wednesday he asked me, "How long have you been boxing?" I knew this was not a good question, and that it would likely lead to something I did not want to hear.
I answered, and he said, "What is this crap you are giving me? You have been boxing long enough to know better. What is this 1-2 Punch bullshit? I want to see more combinations from you."
I think he was referring to my really bad habit of stepping in, throwing a left jab, and then a right cross, then stepping back. Sometimes it is head-head, sometimes head-body, or body-head, or even body-body, but it is always 'In--jab--cross--out, and wait.'
I have had a habit of doing that for a couple of months now, and I think it has finally got to the point where Richard had to say something. That was my "style" of boxing, but Rick does not like it because it is too predictable.
Yeah, he's right. I have to break that habit. That "style" would take my opponent about 30 seconds to interpret, and then I'd be destroyed.
He also said I need to do more running. More? Crap. Maybe I'll just live on the track. Apparently, I am getting tired too fast. He said, "No more tired. Tired doesn't exist."
Well, in the Master's division, rounds are only a minute and a half long. Why do I need three minutes of stamina?
Rick puts me through the exact same training and has the same expectations of me, as with the open class guys. I asked him why.
He won't answer that, but I think the answer is obvious. Can you imagine the amount off ass I could kick all over the ring if I had three minutes of "life" for a one and a half minute round?
So, once again...Richards is right. Damn it. Is he ever wrong?

I tried getting out of the "1-2 Punch" habit at Kobe's class on Thursday.
After the class, Kobe gave me some really good tips on defence. I am not going to reveal them. If I reveal all my secrets, that is like a football team giving up its Playbook to an opposing team. You will just have to step into the ring against me to find out.

In other news, I finally got an appointment with my physician for my medical exam, this Monday afternoon. Good. I can finally get that out of the way, and send that into Boxing Ontario to keep them quiet, until next year anyway.

What else is happening:

Junmar Emon's second professional match will be on September 8 at the Hershey Centre. Tickets are on sale now at the box office or Ticketmaster.

Richards a raison. Merde.

Hey, I did well !

Hello followers of "The Brick" and unique visitors.
Not a lot has been happening lately. You know, "Dog Days of Summer" and such.
However, there has been some interesting sparring.
This past Monday, there was no sparring for me, because there were all small guys. The Heavyweights usually come in on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Jason was sparring a "new" guy who has apparently been boxing for 3 years and has a 16 - 0 record. I have never seen him at Stockyards before, but apparently trained at another gym.
Well, as things happen, Jason pulled his calve, and had to quit sparring.
Guess who had to replace him? Richard yelled to me, "Brick, get in here!"
I looked Richard as if he was crazy. He said, "Come on, finish the round. Let's go."
I thought, 'This is it. I'm going to get creamed so bad.'

I did a round and a half with this guy, plus one round with another 'seasoned' boxer.
I nailed one of them with a nice right cross to the jaw, and almost knocked him to his ass.
Richard was very pleased with my performance, and wants me to use my right more often.
Well, yeah, if I can do that much with my right, I will definitely use it more. I'd also like start working on my uppercut more as well. A good uppercut can drop a guy.

In the meantime, I am still waiting to get to the doctor for my medical. It looks like I will finally be able to get in next week. I can't believe how busy he is. It is summer, he must be spending a lot of time on the golf course.
September is getting close, and I really want to get the exhibition match done.
As I mentioned before, once that first exhibition is done, it makes stepping into the ring for competition that much easier. The Pan Am Games are less than 3 years away.

I guess my main problem is that I underestimate myself. I guess that is better than being cocky. At least one who underestimates himself, can still see room for improvement, and always has something to work towards.
I don't think I will know my full potential until I step into the ring for real. That is another reason why this exhibition match is so important.

That is all for now. Nothing else is really happening in boxing in the Toronto area this month. However, there are some things coming up in September, including Junmar's second professional match.

Richard a crié à moi, «Brick, entrer ici!»

The Brick Is Back

Hi everyone.
Yes, it has been a long time since my last post, but I am back. I am just checking in to ensure all of you that I am not dead, or worse, stuck in Québec.
Actually, I had a great time in Montréal, and got a lot of great stuff for my documentary. I spent most of last week editing.
My documentary about Montréal is now complete, and can be viewed here:
SEVEN DAYS IN MONTRÉAL

It has nothing to do with boxing, but it is a very special project, and my first attempt at a documentary.

Moving on to boxing,
It was nice to be back at my home gym. I had a couple of sparring sessions at Stockyards. Richard had me sparring Jason, again.
Jason is a really big guy, who hits really hard. I spar him a lot, probably because we are very close in skill level.
I have noticed lately, he has not been nailing me as often. Likely because my defence is getting better. Getting hit by Jason does that. Believe me, you don't want to get hit by him. His left jab is enough to push my whole body back a step. I have not yet been hit by his right, and I'd like to keep it that way.

I am still working to drop a weight class. The problem with being at the low-end of Heavyweight, is that I can get opponents like Jason, who have 70 pounds on me. If I can get to the top-end of Light Heavyweight, then I will have the advantage.

We are still doing technical sparring at Bloor Boxing on Thursdays. Although the turn out has been a bit sad lately. Likely because it is summer. Although, summer is not an excuse to stop training. I still do my full training. Even while I was in Montréal filming my doc, I still took time out train.
Anyway...

While we are on the topic of Bloor Gym, they are doing some more work in there.
They just re-did the shower and change room. They are also, finally, fixing the floor of the boxing studio. I can't tell you how many times I wiped out up there due to those loose floor boards.
It is nice to see that they are making an attempt to make the facilities better.

I will be making an appointment to get my medical exam done, finally.
It has to be done, but it has been a very hectic summer so far. I would like to have all of my forms into Boxing Ontario this month. Hopefully, they will be processed quickly. I'd like to have an exhibition match in September. I have not yet discussed it with Richard. Although, everyone else I have spoke with feel that it is a good idea.
I will wait until my registration is processed before I talk to the coach.

That is all for this entry. I am hoping that now that things have slowed a bit, I will be able to post more often.

SEVEN DAYS IN MONTRÉAL
