`The Brick`Is Going To Siberia...

ENTRY 245

...Siberia Boxing Club, That Is

I will be going to speak with the coach of the Siberia Boxing Club.

I am still looking for alternatives to Stockyards.
Cabbagetown is no longer an option, since it is too far to travel.
Gideon is too far away as well.
I can't seem to reach anyone at Sully's.
That leaves Atlas or Siberia.
There may be a few others to look at as well.

The Siberia club looks interesting, as they have an 'extensive competitive program'Although, I have never heard of them or any of their boxers.
Also, they teach a form of boxing known as "Russian boxing".
My only question is, 'What is the difference between Russian boxing and other types of boxing, except that it is taught by a Russian coach?

This is the best I could find:

In 1941 the most important then Soviet specialist in Boxing, K.V. Gradopolov, wrote a book about the right way to fight with fists. In that book, he offered a new exercise, called "group boxing", and he mentioned it was an ancient Russian sport (what he was talking about, was the "Stenka na Stenku" version).*
                                                       *Wikipedia

Stenka na Stenku, aside from being a Russian heavy metal band, is a form of boxing where several men fight in the ring simultaneously, with rules.

I hope that is not what they are teaching there.

Siberia Boxing is far from where I live. It is near Dufferin and Finch. It would take two buses, and about 40 minutes to get there.
However, if they can offer me something unique, take me seriously, and offer me a decent rate, I will take them into strong consideration.

I have to renew my registration with Boxing Ontario within the next five months, so this is the best time to change clubs.

In addition to Siberia, I am also considering talking to the coach at Atlas Boxing Club.
It is also rather far, near Yorkdale Mall.

Although, deep down, I really don't want to have to leave Stockyards. I have friends there.

For now, I am not going to do any extra training. Just the bare minimum. I am not going to waste time working hard for nothing.
I certainly don't need to lose any more weight. I am going to disappear.
I have recently had my annual check-up with my physician, and he said that my weight was right-on for my height and stature.
All I have to do is maintain.

As far as competition goes, it ultimately comes down to who can get me bouts first.
Yes. I want coaches to be able to confirm opponents. Not just, "I'm looking".

I want at least four more before I retire from boxing.

Let me rephrase that, I want to win four before I retire.

I want to see if Stockyards can get me two bouts before the end of the year. That should not be hard to do.
I find it hard to believe that between Niagara Falls, London, Barrie and Peterborough (a 350 km radius), within the most populated area of the country, that there is absolutely nobody who comes close to my stats.

Sorry. I don't buy it.

This is a competition.
I'm not in it.
I'm the head official.

New "Black Division" Starts Later This Year

ENTRY 244

Boxing Canada Introduces New "Black Division"

Boxing rules are constantly changing.
Now is no different. Boxing Canada has announced a new set of rules for amateur boxing that will take effect starting this September.

They are introducing a category for black boxers.

Going forward, if you are black, you can only compete against other blacks.
In addition, you can only compete against other blacks who are within five-years in age.
Also, you must wear larger gloves, and your rounds are only to be one-minute long.

In my opinion, it looks like Boxing Canada is doing their absolute best to make it difficult for black boxers to compete.

For reference, here are two photos of black boxers:

This story is fake.

Did it offend you?
If it did, that's a good thing, because now you know how I feel.
These exact same polices apply to "Masters division" boxers. That is boxers over age 40.

If it isn't right to apply these rules to a person based on race or colour, why is it acceptable to apply them based on a person's age?

Their excuse is safety.
Safety has nothing to do with it.

A 25 year-old boxer with five years experience, and a 45 year-old boxer with five years experience, are exactly the same.
Also, as required in Canada, all competitive boxers must have a physician's note giving permission to participate in boxing activities, regardless of age.

I don't see where safety even comes into play here.

Besides, a 20 year-old can have a heart condition, and a 50 year-old can have a great heart.

Again, where is the safety issue?

I am finding that it is not just the boxing officials that are doing this. Coaches are as well.

I am finding that I am treated differently than other boxers, due to my age.
For example, Why am I restricted to sparring only guys who are older or less-experienced?
Why can't I train with better boxers, to help me improve my skills.
Let me spar a professional once in a while.
As I once said, this is a sport, and you learn from those who are better.

I am stuck in a rut, because I am sparring the same people all the time, and I can't get opponents.
Right now, I spar just for fitness, as I am certainly not getting any technical skills out of it, and most of the time Richard does not even watch me spar.
What is the point of sparring, if the coach does not give feedback?
He gives feedback sometimes, but not in the way he does his younger athletes.

This brings back memories of Kingsway.
Oh, crap. I just felt a cringe.

In an interesting note, I found a guy at Cabbagetown Boxing Club, who would have made a great opponent, age 41, 180 lbs., with one bout.
I told Richard, and he apparently tried to contact Coach Wylie at Cabbagetown, but never received a reply, so he claims.

In the meantime, I contacted Cabbagetown myself with this email:

Hello Mr. Wylie,

My name is Paul.
I am a Master's boxer, registered with Boxing Ontario.

I am currently looking for a new gym to train, that is "Master's freindly".
If your posted roster is updated, it looks like you alreday have a few.

I would like to meet with you and look at your boxing facilities.

Please let me know the hours you are available.

I look forward to meeting you.

Thanks,

Paul "The Brick"

This is part of the reply I received, not a day later:

Paul...I have to be honest with you and tell you I have a great deal of
problems trying to match master boxers...With the way Boxing Ontario
has set the rules up.

     Head Coach, CYC Inc.

Interesting isn't it?

For a coach who is having difficulty setting up bouts for his Masters, he did not seem to reply to Richard's request a few days earlier.
That is...did Richard really contact Coach Wylie in the first place?

This leads me to believe that although the coaches are blaming Boxing Ontario, it appears that they do not seem to try very hard either.

I have even been told by Richard to try to find my own opponents.
What? Isn't that the coach's job?

I have nothing against the coaches, personally. It just seems that they are "giving up" on the older boxers.

I am going to fight to have these discriminating rules rescinded, but I can't do it myself.
I am requesting the help of other boxers, and my loyal readers.
Let us have the Masters division abolished.

I remember when there was no Masters. You could just box as an Elite until you were dead.

Please help.
Let's petition Boxing Canada.

Thanks.

Update and Special Report

ENTRY 243A

UPDATE:
BRAINGLE STILL WITHOUT BRAINS

In an unusual Monday posting, I would like to update you on what has happened with Braingle.

On Sunday, I resubmitted one of the quizzes with all of the (un)necessary changes, and it was returned the same day! For different reasons!
Keeping in mind, the first time they had it for nine days!
How could they have possibly missed anything?

I really seriously think they are doing this to annoy me.

Therefore, I have decided to send a simple one-word quiz to the site administrator:

Yes. I am being a bit harsh, but I can't even be sarcastic.
This is so far beyond stupid that sarcasm won't even work.

You know what I say, "True or false? I care."

Hey! That's another one!

Congratulations to Braingle. You are currently in the lead for winning the 2015 Dunce Award.

This banner is going to look great!

SPECIAL REPORT
Toronto Transit Commission Bus On Time: Scientists Baffled

On Sunday, a T.T.C, bus on Route 7 Bathurst, left the Bathurst station on time.

This phenomena is very rare, which has scientists baffled.

More baffling is that on Monday, a 79 Scarlett Road bus was on time.

"To have two buses on two different routes on time within a 48-hour period is extremely unusual in this parts of the world", said one scientist, "To be honest, we are confused."

In both cases, Emergency Medical Services and the fire department were on standby, but were fortunately not required.

In light of this unusual situation, scientists have released a formula for calculating the chances of a bus being on time:

                                  PTy (a - 16 x 0.04)

                                 -------------------------
                                       b (FB + 31)

Where "a" is the probability of a fare increase, and "b" is the average IQ of all public transit employees, including Enforcement and Customer Service.

What scientists have found while applying this formula to all public transit systems in Ontario, is that "a" is inversely proportional to the solution. This means that the higher the fare, the less of a chance the buses will be on time.

The chances of a bus being on time, will of course always be a finite number, provided that the input data is within an average range.

When scientists tried this formula with MiWay (Mississauga), the results always turned out as 1:∞ (infinity), which means that a bus will never be on time in Mississauga

The reason for this is due to a problem with the formula, when specifically applied to Mississauga, "b"< 47.

This will result in the answer of infinity, since the input for employee IQ ("b") is out of average range.

When applied to the T.T.C. (Toronto), the answer was always at least 1:5000, but much higher on certain routes. The chance of being on time is much lower on some routes, as indicated below.

  • 7 Bathurst   1 : 43,610
  • 24 Victoria Park 1 : 19,122
  • 35 Jane    1  : 77,423
  • 41 Keele   1 : 12,006
  • 79 Scarlett Road   1 : 65,770

Scientists are working on removing the bugs from the formula, and are hoping it can be applied to more innovative uses, such as calculating the chances of the Conservative party being re-elected in October.

SPECIAL REPORT
'The Brick' Considering Moving To Sully's Or Cabbagetown

There is a possibility I may be leaving Stockyards for a boxing gym that is more "Masters' friendly".

Stockyards has lost a lot of the older guys, and I am beginning to get the feeling that the coaches there do not like coaching Masters.
It is likely I will be retiring from boxing within the next couple of years, but I will definitely be re-registering for at least 2016.
I am currently considering Sully's or Cabbagetown as my new host club.
