Sparring, Sparring, and More Sparring...Yay!

Hello fellow boxers, boxing fans, and all loyal followers of "The Blue Corner".

Your friend, The Brick, has had a lot of sparring this week. I think you all know how much I like sparring, and how serious I take it.

I enjoy the light technical sparring at Bloor, as it allows me to work on my skills. However, as I mentioned once before, I do not get a lot of chances to spar at Stockyards. That is beginning to change.
There is one big advantage with sparring at Stockyards, full contact.
It is important for boxers to spar full contact before stepping in for competition. You need to know what it is like to take a hit. I have seen guys quit boxing after their first match because they did not have enough hard sparring.
The body gets used to getting hit, and it does not hurt so much after a while.
I have had guys apologize for hitting too hard, and I could hardly feel it. Well, I can feel the impact, but there is no pain.
It also helps in a self defence situation. The one who does not feel getting hit will always have the advantage in a street situation.

I did 6 rounds of light sparring on Tuesday.
This was when a new guy thought he was hitting me too hard.

Wednesday I did 3 rounds of hard sparring. It was my first at Stockyards. Richard put me up against another Heavyweight. He was a bit younger, and a bit better.
This guy had me against the ropes twice. He took me right off guard, because I had never been on the ropes before. I was confused and did not know what to do.  I covered and bent forward, but I dropped out of my stance.
Richard was saying, "Stay in you boxing stance when you are on the ropes"!
I felt like telling him, 'get in here and try it', but he already has...

It was back to the usual light sparring at Bloor Boxing on Thursday.
I was impressed, there was a guy there who was older than I. He was in his 50s, and he gave me quite a work-out. He literally ran circles around me.
He was also not a bad boxer.
I like to see that. If a guy his age can still do that, so can I, or anyone else for that matter. I hate it when people say, "I'm too old for that". Hey, here is a 50+ guy still boxing and giving younger guys the run-around. That says a lot. Good for him. All the best.
I did 15 rounds on Thursday, which was the most for me, so far. I was also told that I have improved a lot.

I have to say that at one point during one of my many sparring sessions, a guy drilled me in the eye:

Nice Shiner.

Cela en dit long.

Road To the Pan-Ams, After A Short Detour

Notes about this blog:
This blog is changing! Not to worry, it is not changing that much, and hopefully for the better.
Two things about language. First of all, I am going to be cleaning up the language used. Although, I believe in freedom of speech, and that a writer should be able to use profanity as he pleases. However, I don't think it fits a news article. At the same time, I don't want to go too far the other way, either.
I have decided to replace 'sh*t' and 'f*ck' with other words such as 'crapolla' and 'freaking'.  This will take affect immediately, but I will not be going back to edit older entries.
Also, you may have noticed that this blog has become bilingual.
The reason for this is more for myself. I plan on moving to Quebec in a couple of years, and the primary language of business is French. By writing in bilingual, it helps me learn the language by comparing it to the English.
Right now, I am using translation software and then doing manual tweaks. My goal is to eventually not need the software at all.
Anyone who understands French, and wants to provide feedback, it is appreciated.
Lastly, I will be changing the photo. This photo has been used here for a long time, and the thing is, it is outdated. I no longer wear that uniform. A new photo is being done with my new green and black uniform.
I will also be using a new font "Verdana" starting this week.
Enjoy.

Let me start by clarifying my plans before everyone starts freaking out.
My goal is still to try to make the Pan-Am Games in Toronto. However, after that, I will be moving to Montréal, where I may still continue boxing at a recreational level. That still gives me over three years of training in Toronto. The reasons for my move to Montreal are personal, and will not be discussed here.
I know that I may have said I only want to compete for a year, but that can not be possible if I want to represent Canada in the Pan-Ams.
Will I be too old? Well, you already know how I am going to answer that, so I won't bother.

As I keep saying, sparring is one of the most important parts of training for a boxer. I was able to get two sessions in this week at Bloor Boxing, but I am still having a few problems getting partners at Stockyards, which is where my main coach is located.
I am hoping to start getting more, once I see more guys in my division come forward. However, for sparring, I don't see why I can't go against open-class guys, either.

I am going to have to get off the pot, and get my Boxing Ontario certification re-done. I have been putting it off, but it looks like I am now going to have to do it. Next month, I will be doing it. Once that is done, I will seriously talk to Coach Richard about competing. It also means I can do some more serious sparring. I can spar with guys from other clubs.
That brings me to something else. A boxer from Kingsway read my last entry, and accepted my challenge. He wants to have a match against me, so I can prove that Kingsway coaches suck.
Although, that was not really meant to be a challenge, but it is still a great idea. Once I have my re-certification from Boxing Ontario, I am going to see if I can bring this Kingsway boxer in for some hard sparring, and eventually a match. Since the cry-baby coaches at Kingsway won`t let me go there.
I am really looking forward to this. I am going to really hype this.
I mean, if this " boxer" from Kingsway doesn't mind getting creamed and made a fool of in front of an audience, then I am all for it. I hope he remembers to bring his crying towel. Oh, and I am going to get Rogers TV to broadcast it as well. Maybe he should bring another towel.
See, the hype has started already.

The two sparring sessions this week were very constructive. Both times I got nailed quite nicely in the ribs. Yes, I still have to work on body defence.
On Thursday, I sparred a guy who was very young. I believe he is below 20, and I'm sorry, I forgot his name.  He is very aggressive, which is understandable, his testosterone is sky-high.
As I always say, if you go easy on me, I will do the same. However, if you hit me hard, I hit back equally as hard.
Kobe then called me out, "Paul", and I turned, and got clocked on the chin in the process. Thanks, Kobe. Anyway, he said that I was hitting too hard. Well, I was only hitting as hard as I was getting hit.
Okay, what ever.

That's all for this entry.

Voirle battage médiatique a déjà commencé.

Good Luck, Junmar!

First of all, good job by Stockyards Boxing Gym for raising almost $1000 to save the High Park Zoo.
That being said, there is some more great boxing action coming up this Friday April 20.
Here is the poster as posted in the Stockyards Gym:

Do I see Kingsway on there? I do. Three times!
There is even one match with Kingsway vs. Stockyards.
Yeah, judging by the quality of coaching at Kingsway, I don`t give them much of a chance. I will give them one out of the three, because it is slightly possible that there may be a coach out there who is slightly worse than the coaches at Kingsway, although I doubt it.
I will say that they will not beat Stockyards. The coaches at Stockyards are 20 times better, and as we all know, the coach makes the athlete. Stockyards makes athletes, Kingsway makes crapolla.
I really hope that one of my bouts is against a Kingsway boxer, just so I can prove how much they stink, and how great Richard is.
Matt and Kevin, both from Stockyards will also be on Friday`s card.

I will be video recording the event. D-I-T-O Productions has partnered with CANEX Video Productions, so we can now bring you a whole new perspective of this great sport. Now with two-cameras and awesome editing between both of us.
See a sample here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI5wl5oU-hQ

Junmar Emon will not be on this Friday's card because....

He is in training for his first professional match next month at the Hershey Centre on May 12.
I knew about this two months ago, but could not say anything until it was officially announced.
His first opponent will be Daryl Peron from Hamilton. Oh great. I am liking this already! Kick some Hamilton butt, Junmar!!! Send that bum back to the foundry.
In all seriousness, Junmar is a good friend, and I have followed his boxing career since I met him years ago. I will continue to follow him through his professional career. All the best and good luck, Junmar.
I have your signature, so when you become rich and famous, I can sell it on ebay and retire...:) :) :)

Spring Has Sprung, Save the High Park Zoo !

Yes, spring is here and that means a new training schedule.

First, I would like to note that sparring/training at Bloor has been going quite well.
In addition to all the sparring class at Bloor, Richard has found someone in my division for sparring. However, that guy wants a month before he steps into the ring. That`s fine. At least I have someone in my division, although he is a beginner, it will make for some good sparring.

I have had a few responses to my ad for the private boxing lessons. I have started teaching this week.
I have to say that even while teaching, I am learning. This is definitely going to help me in the long run.

In the news, Stockyards will be hosting its next live boxing on April 20. Please come out and join us for some exciting boxing. So far, five Stockyards athletes will be competing.
Also, Stockyards will be hosting a fundraiser this Friday April 13. Here is a snippet from their website:

In Sponsorship with The George Bell Arena, Whelan’s Irish Pub on Bloor and Stockyards Boxing & Fitness Centre

On Friday April 13th, 2012 George Bell arena has generously donated the ice time from 6:00pm to 8:00pm for a night of family fun to raise funds for the High Park Zoo. 100% of the money raised on this night will be donated in the fight to keep the zoo open for the public.

The ice will be open for a Family skate from 6:00pm – 7:00pm. This event is open to everyone and all we ask is that you make a donation for the High Park Zoo.

Then join your team for a game of Shinny from 7:00pm – 8:00pm. Register in advance at Stockyards gym to join a team. There will be a charge of $20.00 per person to participate in the game, with 100% of the money raised going to save the zoo. Or send your email request to Richard@stockyardsboxingandfitness.com to register

Parkdale – High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette is fighting this cut, but needs your help! That`s amende.

Want A Boxing Lesson?...Come Get One!

Want some???
Well, come get it...but its not free.

Barry has re-opened the Mix Athletic Club. It is a long story, but this is the third location. This time it is located near Christie Pits Park.
He invited me in to have a look. I have to say that it is not as large as his other locations, but it is a good size for small classes and individual training.
He said that he needed help getting people into his new location.
I offered to help him out by looking after the place during the day, but that I would also offer one-on-one training for boxers.
I would charge for the lessons, and for those who are not already members of the Mix Athletics club, I would pay a portion of the proceeds to Barry for the use of his gym. I would then be able to offer a discounted rate for members, which is incentive for people to join.

For the next couple of weeks, I will be spending about six hours a day helping out at the gym, and looking after the place, so Berry can look after other affairs.
This does not in any way change my personal training schedule with the other gyms, although I now have full use of the Mix Athletics Club as well.

Those who choose to join the Mix Athletics Club will enjoy full use of cardio and weight equipment, boxing equipment, and all classes.
Tim Merritt will be teaching the group boxing classes. He is pretty good. He taught me a bit a long time ago, before I started at Stockyards or Bloor.

Not to take anything away from Tim, I will not be conducting any group classes right now. However, I am offering scheduled private lessons.
Right now, I am offering four different types of classes. 60-minute and 90-minute classes for both novice and advanced boxers.
Please note that at this time Mix Athletics Club is not a competition facility. I am offering these lessons for people who want to learn boxing for exercise or defence only, or for competition boxers as an addition to their current training. I am not here to replace or compete against facilities such as Stockyards or Bloor Boxing.
I am still in very good relations with both of these fine fitness facilities, and I am only doing this as a form of income, and to help Berry.

Here is what I offer:

60-Minute Novice Class
Warm-up, skipping and stretching
Footwork practice
Basic defence
Basic offence
Heavy bag
Ab work, push-ups, jumping-jacks
Cool-down, stretching

90-Minute Novice Class

Warm-up, skipping and stretching
Footwork practice
Basic defence
Basic offence
Weight training for boxing
Heavy bag
Technical boxing/theory
Ab work, push-ups, jumping jacks
