Sparring the "New" Guy? Awkward!

ENTRY 259

Sparring The "New" Guy ?

Oh, geez. You know. I have been over this before.
I am not a huge fan of sparring guys who have never been in the ring before.
For some reason, I am the one who always seems to get stuck with that "job".
I am far from being a beginner, and sparring the "new" guys really throws me off.
It is because I really don't know what to do. Should I go easy, or not so easy?
Also, since they have never before been in the ring, they are generally awkward, and therefore make me look awkward.
When the coach is watching, that last thing I want to do is look like an idiot.
Then again, there may be a reason why the coach wants me to work with these guys.

Junmar was watching also, and he was obviously not impressed. He shook his head and walked away.
Its amazing how I noticed that while sparring, isn't it?
Well, it is difficult to impress Junmar. He has very high standards. Not that its wrong to have high standards, but walking away may not be the right answer either.

I don't know about Monday. It did not seem to be a very good sparring day for me.
Although, a lot of guys showed up, Richard had me only do two rounds with Fabio.

Yeah, Richard is back to restricting me to two rounds of sparring each day, and we all know why: "Too old".

Speaking of "old".
One of my co-workers' dad is a boxer. He is 60, and he trains at Cabbagetown.
Interesting how he is not "too old" for anything.
Actually, he is coaching now, and will apparently be at the next Stockyards' card.
With any luck, he will see me compete.
At this point, I'd be happy to just see myself compete.

"The Brick", Becoming A Heavyweight, Again

Richard said that he is looking for an opponent, and with my weight gain, it will now be a bit easier.
Yes. I gained. Somehow, I gained six pounds over the last two months. Oddly, I did not get fatter. That is a good thing, of course.
The question is, where did I gain? I don't see any change, but every scale I step on shows a gain.
The wife said that my chest and arms are bigger.
I never noticed, but then again, I really don't admire myself in the mirror.
Maybe I should...

Sparring "Newt" and My Boxing Trivia Is Now On!

ENTRY 258

Sparring Report: Thursday

For some reason, I did not get to spar on Wednesday, but I got to do three rounds on Thursday.

Richard had me spar Newton.
Newton is a very small guy. He must weigh only 130 soaking wet.

Richard likes me to spar him, because he is very fast, and makes me move a lot.
That is true, but I hit a lot harder.
I made him bleed, and felt bad about it.
I would not feel bad if the guy is my size or bigger, but it was like I was beating up on a guy smaller than I.
When I spar him again, I am not going to hit so hard. It really isn't fair.

After that, I did four sets of sprints, and two laps around the park.
On Wednesday, in lieu of sparring, I did 10 sets of sprints, and three laps.
Today, my legs feel like they are about to fall off.

Boxing Trivia Quiz Finally Available

Well, after only about three months, the administrators at braingle.com finally accepted my boxing quiz.
They were insisting that I provided proof that my answers were correct. Although I am a boxer and already know the sport, they insisted that I prove the accuracy of my answers.
Well, initially I wasn't going to bother, but you all know how I always put up a fight when I know I'm right.
I did about 600 pages of research, submitted it to them, and on Thursday, I received an email that my trivia was accepted.

Now, lets get people to try it.

Test your knowledge of boxing, with these 12 questions:
"ROUND ONE"
Will there be a Round Two?
Maybe.
I was seriously thinking about it, but it is a lot of work.

"The Brick's" Seventh Anniversary

ENTRY 257

This Is A Banner Week For 'The Brick'

It has been seven years from this week that I returned to boxing from a 16-year hiatus.

It was the second week of September when I started "boxing lessons" at Bloor Fitness, when it was a boxing gym, and Richard and Junmar were still working there.

When boxing at Bloor started going downhill, I moved to Kingway Boxing Club, but was only there eight months.
I was not happy with their bullshit, and it was at about a month before I left Kingway, that I found out about Richard starting his own boxing gym, so my days at Kingsway were numbered anyway.
I was given the boot from Kingsway exactly two weeks before Richard officially opened Stockyards.

Interestingly, after seven years, I still have a membership at Bloor Fitness.
Things have happened over the years while I was with them, and all are logged at various places throughout this blog. Unfortunately, most of my experiences there were not very positive.
Ultimately, the convenience of having a 24/7 access is really the only thing that keeps me there.
Apparently, there are other Stockyards' members who also still hold a Bloor membership.

Bloor is good for cardo training, and they still have heavy bags on the second floor.
I trained almost all last week at Bloor, since I could not attend Stockyards due to having an oddball work schedule.

Kingsway was good for nothing.
That was a waste of eight months, and unreasonably expensive at that.

I have to say that I saw the most advancement at Stockyards.

There are moments even at Stockyards when I just want to rip someone's face right off, but it always seems to work out,
I guess that explains why I can never really leave Stockyards. It is like a second home for me.

I will be returning to Stockyards more often, since work has put me on a fixed nights-only schedule.

Here is to another seven years of boxing.

Mike Tyson Visits Toronto, Again

One of my favourite boxers of all time was in Toronto this past weekend.
Mike Tyson was a guest at Fan Expo.
It has been just about a year since the last time he was here, and that is when I gained the most respect for him.
That is when he told Nathan Downer to fuck off on live TV.
Mike Tyson Tells Off Nathan Downer
Do you have any idea how long I have been wanting to do that?

This photo is from last year when Mike Tyson met Mayor Rob Ford, and called him "The best mayor ever".
Okay, so Mike Tyson isn't up on politics.
Who really is?

I would have paid the $60 admission to Fan Expo just to meet Mike Tyson, but I was in Hamilton.

Sparring Report: "The Brick" Gets Broken

ENTRY 256

Short Week At Stockyards

Monday is was the only day I can get into Stockyards this week. I am on afternoons for the rest of the week, but I am off all of Labour Day weekend.
Stockyards will be closed for Labour Day as well, so my next sparring session will be next Tuesday.

Sparring Report, and "The Brick" Gets Broken {Again}

Four rounds of sparring this week is all I will get, and it is just as well.

I got to spar Kofi again.
The last time I sparred him was last week, and he wasn't so active. He threw mostly just jabs, but was still challenging.
This week, however, he was a bit more aggressive.
He used his right more. He actually nailed me with a right-cross to the jaw four times. Really hard. A couple of times it knocked me off balance.
Oh, yeah, he tee'd off on me good.
I really honestly think he was trying to knock me out.

That was this past Monday, and the last Monday, Tyler smashed my ribs good.

That is two times getting a butt-kicking within just over a week.

If Richard was around, he would have said it is because I am too old.
Age has nothing to do with it. These are both better boxers.
That is exactly why I like to have a variety of sparring.
Not that I want nor need a butt-kicking every week, but it is good to know where I stand as a boxer.
I saw where I needed to work on defence. Up to now I thought my defence was good.
It was, but not good enough.

I have to admit, I was getting cocky. Until recently, I was basically having my way with my sparring partners.
Last week, Tyler brought me down a notch.
This week, Kofi took me down two notches.

Yeah. I kind of had the cockiness knocked out of me.
Boxing tends to do that more so than other sports.

Every athlete in every sport needs a butt-kicking now and then. It prevents us from becoming too cocky.
I don't care how good an athlete thinks he is. I don't believe that anyone is the best at anything. There is always someone better. It is a never-ending cycle.
