I Risk Being Disqualified From the Golden Gloves...My Fault

ENTRY 389

OH, NO. NOT THIS

The Golden Gloves is less than four weeks away and I have been looking forward to it for a long time.
This is my first major tournament, and I am happy to be part of it.
However, I risk not being able to go.

It all relates to when I was suspended.

First let me explain that I am not using this as an excuse.
However, I was pissed about being TKO'd and I was pissed about being suspended.
I guess I somehow subconsciously just stopped caring, and this happened.
I certainly would not stop caring on purpose. I care too much about my fitness for that to happen.

On Friday, I bought a new scale to help me track my fitness level leading up to the Golden Gloves.

Does anyone remember the $10 scale from the bathroom supply store that was mechanical? You would stop on it and it would spin around a bit and then finally reveal your weight, and it was always a couple of pounds off?
Well, it is not like that any more.
I just paid $50 for a 'scale' that has this huge LCD display that tells you your whole fitness history.

I was not completely happy with the results, but as I explained earlier it was my fault.

Your total body mass, measured in either pound, kilograms, or stone, is made up of four components, aside from flesh.

These are what is recommended as per the scale's manual which is based on data from the University of Illinois Faculty of Health.
I don't know how much one can trust the University of Illinois, but for now it is all I have to go by.

The four components that make up your body mass.in order of heaviness are: water,.and then fat or muscle, depending on if you are male or female. Finally is bone mass.

For some reason, body fat percentage levels depend on age and gender.
Acceptable levels get higher as you get older, and are more forgiving for women than for men.

For athletic males over 40: Body fat should be no higher than 17%, and no more than 22% for non-athletic. Over 22% is considered 'overweight'.
It is around only 12% for people in their 20s, and is not considered 'overweight' until over 25% for older women.

For everyone, water should be 50 - 60 %, and is inversely proportional to body fat level.

For everyone, bone mass is between 4 and 5 %.
It is interesting to note that although humans have 206 bones, they do not weigh a lot.

The final component making up body mass is muscle.
For all females, muscle mass should be between 30 - 35 %.
For all males, muscle mass should be at least 40%

Here are my readings from Saturday March 11:

The only thing I don't understand is that if you add these readings it comes to 124.7 %.
I'm not exactly sure how that works.
Some of these readings might not be totally accurate, but at least it gives me a bit of an idea, which is better than nothing.

I am a bit embarrassed by this since I pride myself on being in good condition.
Although, it is an acceptable reading for medical standards, it is not acceptable for an athletic standard.

However, I felt that it was important to share this since it is part of the struggle of an 'older' athlete.
I also hope that it will help other athletes to understand the importance of keeping up your conditioning.

I have to work very hard now.
My goal is to lose three pounds in two weeks. At that time I will evaluate to see what I need to do next.
I want to lose enough in order to have a buffer so that I don't creep into Heavyweight.
The cutoff for Light-Heavyweight is 190 lbs. The Golden Gloves will disqualify me if I am over. That would be a disaster after all the time and effort I have put into getting there.
It would also likely mean that my coaches would have a shitfit..and that would be totally understandable.

Before my bout with Scott Turnbut, I was at 15.6 % fat and 184.5 lbs.
I want to get back to that.
I actually want to get my body fat percentage to 12% and my weight to 180 or so.
Not impossible.

I am not going to get myself disqualified for such a stupid reason. Even if it means a salad-only diet for the next two weeks.
It also means more cardio work and sparring. Sparring, in addition to being good practice, also burns a lot of calories.
I figured that each round of sparring trims about 100 calories.
Its true. Boxing is really good for you.

TRAINING IDEAS BY COACH BROCK

That being said, I sparred five rounds on Saturday. Three with the coach and two with another guy.

It was a very constructive session.
Brock gave me three pointers of things I should do in the ring.
I am not going to share them with you since my future opponents may be reading this.

In addition to my new diet and extended training for the Golden Gloves, I will be working on these three techniques as well.

Coach also showed me two new things that I can share with you.
These are training ideas that any boxer can try.

Treadmill sprints

This one really kills the legs, but really pays off in the long run.

This exercise involves running on the treadmill with a twist.
The treadmill is turned off.
You unplug the treadmill and sprint as fast as you can for 20 seconds. Then slow for 10 seconds, then start again. You do this for one round.
What makes this different is that instead of you being pulled by the treadmill, you are using your own leg power to pull the treadmill belt.
This is a good exercise. The first time I did it, I could not do a full round.  Although, I can now.

Of course unless you are using your own treadmill, make sure it is okay to do this first.

Pivot drills

Here is a good drill for improving your footwork and speed.

Put something in the centre of the ring. A glove or something.
Start in one corner and move forward to the middle of the ring. Once you reach the middle, immediately pivot and work your way back to the next corner. Then work your way to the middle again. Then pivot to the next corner.
Keep doing that to each corner for an entire round. Then for the next round go the opposite direction.

I have been doing this drill for about a week, and I have found it very useful.
I have seen some improvement in my footwork and speed in the ring.

If anyone else has a useful drill they want to share, let me know about it, and it may be posted on this blog.

Golden Gloves Announced (Finally) !!!

ENTRY 388

I CAN NOW OFFICIALLY TRAIN FOR THE GOLDEN GLOVES

The Golden Gloves has finally been announced.
Well, at least the some of it.
This year, as mentioned before, they are being held during more than one weekend, and at different locations.

The preliminaries will be on April 8 in the city of Kitchener.

The finals will be held during the last weekend of April in Mississauga.
Of course Mississauga. My absolute favourite city. Of all the cities in Ontario they just had to pick that one.

Anyway, I have already started training for the Gloves.
I have already registered.
I have registered at 188 lbs. and the Golden Gloves does not allow any discrepancies in weight, so it is very important that I maintain my weight for the next four weeks.

So, what they have done is they are going to try to hold the preliminaries and quarter-finals in one day.
That sounds quite...hectic...for lack of a better word.
I am not sure when the semi-finals are being held, unless that will be in Mississauga as well.

For now, I am concentrating on the prelims.
Sparring as much as I can and doing pad work with the coach.
Since I am on pre-bout training, I am at a gym six times per week. I am working on boxing technical, cardio, as well as strength conditioning.
As mentioned in a previous entry, I am no longer relying on technical skills alone. I have to be prepared for any type of opponent.

For the prelims, I was thinking of staying in the Kitchener area for the entire weekend.
I have been on Trivago to look for hotels for that weekend.
They are really expensive. I mean for Kitchener. The Kitchener area is not exactly a number one vacation spot.
Seriously. A cheap crappy motel in Kitchener for that weekend is $85 a night.
Really?
Keep in mind this is Kitchener we are talking about.
My God, Hamilton is less expensive than that, and there is much more to see and do in Hamilton.

Getting there is not a problem, GO Transit goes there. Albeit, a bit complicated since there is no direct service from Toronto to Kitchener.

However, the Golden Gloves is not scheduled to finish until 11 PM, but will likely go longer.
Therefore, even if there is still GO Transit service at that time, it would mean likely not getting home until after 3 AM.
Therefore, I have decided to just stay in Kitchener on the Sunday.

If anyone knows of a reasonable place to stay in the Kitchener area on that weekend, please let me know.

Thanks.

Sparring In Ottawa Is On the Bucket List

ENTRY 387

SPARRING LAST WEEK, BUT IS IT ENOUGH?

I did four good rounds with Coach Sarah on Thursday.
That is great for technical work.
She is awesome for teaching technical and I appreciate that. However, as I found out the hard way in December, technical alone is not enough.
I need to work on brute power as well. Inflict some blunt force trauma.
I need to spar some really big guys who are not going to be at all bothered by getting hit really hard.

There is a guy at Stockyards I can spar sometimes, but I still have to find out if I am covered to spar there. Boxing Ontario certainly will not cover me.

In the meantime, I have also had invites to spar in Ottawa and New York.

I plan on going to Ottawa this summer anyway, so that is not a problem.

However, going to New York is a bit more difficult. There is a sparring session In April that I have been invited to.
It is interesting because they are sponsored sessions. I am not exactly sure how that works. Nevertheless, I want to go.
The problem is that I currently do not have a valid WHTI travel document.
I am currently in the process of obtaining a Nexus, but the process is quite lengthy as it requires government security clearance from both Canada and the United States.

I do have an advantage in that my job already requires a security clearance, so it should not be difficult getting another.
Also, that I am a Canadian citizen. As per Canadian law, a citizen of Canada can never be refused entry into Canada.
That being said, I am not a U.S. citizen. Therefore, the United States does NOT have to let me in.
However, I don't see problems, but the process can take a while. I hope it is done by April.

It looks like 'The Brick' is going to be doing some travelling this year.
I have no more butts left to kick in Toronto, so I have to go elsewhere.

CONGRATS TO GODFREY AND MOHAMMED

Two of my professional boxer friends won big in Mississauga on Saturday.

Mohammed has now won six in a row, and I think this was Godfrey's first bout. At least I don't know of him having any previous.

Congratulations to both.

Mohammed wins in Mississauga, February 25.

Godfrey with coach Brock (right).

Mohammed again.

Good job.

The OBA Boxing Show Schedule For 2017: _____________________

ENTRY 386

'THE BRICK' IS TICKED

Hello all. Welcome to another 'Blue Corner'.
I am not overly happy this week.

I have just been on a medical suspension, and could not do any sparring.

I have been off suspension for over a week now, and still can't get any sparring.
I think I had a couple of light rounds last Thursday, but other than that, nothing.

I have things to work on and a lot of catching up to do.
However, I am not even sure why or what I am training for.

The Ontario Boxing Association keeps moving the dates for the Golden Gloves.
At first it was supposed to be in the spring, then they moved it to summer, and then to the fall. Now they have no idea when they want to have it.
This is a sanctioning body for boxing in Ontario and they are so disorganized.
As much as Boxing Ontario was a pain in the butt, at least they gave plenty of notice for upcoming events.

It is annoying because they really expect people to just drop their lives for the Golden Gloves?

This is more of a problem than it appears. Due to the new format of the Golden Gloves, local gyms don't want to schedule any cards until they also know what is going on.

So, here is what is happening under the OBA and all it's affiliated clubs for the next few months: Nothing.

Seriously?

Seriously.

For now, I am remaining on the regular training schedule, because there is really nothing happening; but somebody could just drop a bout onto me at any time..
Well, I will just have to do my best,. After all, as much as I'd like it to, my whole life does not revolve around boxing.

OBA Golden Gloves...Not Your Traditional Tournament (Any More)

ENTRY 385

THE (NEW) GOLDEN GLOVES?

I am now officially in training for the Golden Gloves.
This years' Gloves are going to be a bit different.
Instead of being compressed into one weekend, they are being held over a period of a few weeks.
I am not sure of the exact week they will be starting and if they will be held all at the same location, or at a different location each time. These have yet to be announced.

The reason for 'uncompressing' the tournament as provided by the Ontario Boxing Association is that it is less stress for the athletes.
That is true, but I think there is more to it than that.
They gave the reason that the government does not like that boxers are stressed so much in one weekend.
That doesn't make sense. Why would the government care about that? The government barely cares about the things they should be caring about.
It is more likely that they (OBA) are trying to save money by not needing to rent a hall for the entire weekend.
You know, I really can't blame them for that.
Also, they are right about putting too much stress on the athletes. It would be a lot better for the boxers to compete once per week instead of four or five times in two or three days.
I think it is worth a try. It could turn out to be interesting. Especially if they are each held at a different gym.
However, my only concern is transportation, but that is something that can be worked out later. Maybe I can get coach to drive me. It is not as if any of these are going to be that far away from Toronto. All the OBA sanctioned gyms are within two hours of Toronto.

Training hard and looking forward to my first Golden Gloves.

'GOPRO' IS A HIT !

During the last Stockyards' Boxing was the first time I introduced the use of the GoPro on one of the ring poles.
As per the viewer retention stats from YouTube, the parts where the GoPro was used have a higher viewer rating than the rest of the production.
That means that the GoPro shots were a hit.
Now that I have two GoPro type cams, my idea for future boxing coverage is to put one on each white corner pole.
I will be testing this at the Toronto Boxing Academy during sparring sessions over the next couple of weeks.

While I am on the topic of video production, I have to put a pause to the vlogs.
My original idea was to do a lot more outdoors, and since the weather in this area has not really been 'outdoor friendly' lately, I will be taking a break with the vlog productions until I can do more outside.
