I Can't See Clearly Now, But Maybe Later

JOIN US FOR TECHNICAL SPARRING AT BLOOR BOXING AND FITNESS

Despite some Quack telling me I can not box right now, I am still training at Bloor Boxing. Every Tuesday and Thursday, I attend Kobe's classes. By the way, anyone interested in boxing, this is a great class. Turn out has been rather poor, so if you are a member of Bloor Fitness, drop by the boxing studio Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 PM for some great technical sparring. No experience in necessary.
If you are not a member, this is a great time to join. Boxing is the best thing for working off that Holiday dinner.
Drop by 2295 Dundas Street West for more information.

"THE BRICK" GOING FOR EYE TESTS

I have an appointment in January for the retinal specialist to see how bad my retinas really are. There is a very slight chance he may say that it is okay for me to compete, but the way things have been going, I am beginning to highly doubt that.

D-I-T-O PRODUCTIONS AND PHOTOGRAPHY CLOSED FOR THE SEASON

This is the time of year that my productions company, Digital Images Toronto, shuts down. There is very little happening this time of year, so we are closed.
We will be closed to all video production, editing, and photography projects from December 22 until March 9. The only exception will be the boxing cards held at Stockyards, as per the existing agreement we have with the club.
Due to changes made by Webshots (Now called Smile), we will be closing our account with them, and moving all photos to Flickr.
The first set of new photos are now there. See the entire photo set from Wrestling For Noah from Studio 205 in  Hamilton, here: Wrestling For Noah

Down, But Not Out...

---English---

Well, things have taken a very big turn for The Brick.
I have finally received the results of all my medical tests. I passed everything.
However, and this is a **BIG** 'However'... One of my eye test reports came back, and I have been found to have Retinopathy. It is a hereditary problem that causes weakness and brittleness of the retinas. It does not immediately cause vision loss, but it means my eyes can not be exposed to shock.
That means no strong blows to the head...so, no boxing! The eye specialist had specifically designated, 'I DO NOT RECOMMEND BOXING' on the report.

I personally think they are being overly-protective. I have never heard of somebody's retinas detaching because of getting hit. Anyway...

The problem can be corrected through medication and surgery, but who knows how long that can take? It will likely be a couple of years.

You know I am going to fight this. If I have to, I will go to every doctor in Ontario, Quebec, and if needed, the States.

This does not make any sense. I have looked everywhere, and I can not find any medical records that prove any such thing can happen.
If I take their logic into consideration, then I can't cook for myself any more, either. I could be bending over something in the kitchen, and smuck my head against the cabinets. I can see the headlines now: "Man Goes Blind While Attempting To Make Pasta". Are they going to tell me I am not allowed in the kitchen?
That is the worst kind of all the kinds of bullshit there is.

Nobody wants me to be a boxer for some reason, and they are going out of their way to see that it does not happen.

I have told Richard, and he was very understanding and supportive.
For now, I will not be attending the Stockyards Gym, but will be returning in the new year.

I will continue to use Bloor Gym, and keep in good physical condition, and  I will continue with Kobe's classes.

The fight is not over until the bell rings, and I have not heard a bell. Have you heard a bell?

I am down, but not out.

Remember, nobody can beat The Brick.

Round Three...

Round Trois...

I'm In the Wrong Line of Work

--English--

Okay, you know, the medical profession is the biggest rip off in the world.
I am getting shoved around between different physicians for a very simple procedure. Then, every visit gets billed to public heath care.

I called the specialist today for my results. The office told me they won't be ready until January 22.
Okay, forgive me for being annoyed, but would you not think that with today's technology, they can not have these results much sooner?

Now, I am expected to go back to my family physician, and ask him for the results, and to authorize my boxing forms.
This is the same physician, who two months ago, advised me against boxing.

Tomorrow, I am going to my own physician to get the results. If he still refuses to authorize the form, I will now have to wait another two months for the specialist to get off his butt, or go to another doctor.

I think I am being royally screwed here. Everyone else can just walk in and get these forms done in one day. Why does it take almost five months for me?

I'm sorry, but it is getting frustrating, back and fourth to different doctors, and in the meantime, I still have to pay gym dues for something I can't freaking use.

Why do I even have to get this done anyway? When I boxed in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, there were no forms or registration. You just go in, talk to the coach, and he arranges a match for you. You get checked by the ringside doctor before your bout. Simple, stress-free process. Why does Boxing Ontario have to make things so damn complicated? Oh yeah, I forgot. They are a bureaucratic dictatorship.

I am definitely in the wrong line of work. I should have been a physician, so I can sit back and get paid for making people's lives difficult.

Anyway, remember when I wrote about my struggles getting a full-time job?
It finally happened. I was given an offer letter yesterday to be a Junior IT Administrator for the Government of Ontario. I start next week.
So, that is a bit of stress off my back. I will still keep doing part-time with Rogers TV, because I like doing it.
I will be going in this evening to cover the Metro Bowl at the Rogers Centre. It should be interesting, Mayor Rob Ford's team is playing.

That is all for this entry. I will keep everyone posted on what is happening.

Thanks for your support.

McGrory's Big Move and the Return Of Mr. MMA

---English---

I am still playing the waiting game. I have still not received the official results of my tests, and now I am starting to get annoyed. I have been very patient. How long does it take?
I have decided to call the specialist on Monday. I will politely ask him to get off his butt and authorize my registration. There is really no reason for him not to. I want this all done by the end of the year.

In sparring news:
Remember when I sparred that big MMA jiu-jitsu guy last month at Bloor?
Well, he has not been around for a while.
He was back last Thursday, to kick my butt. He must have been away practicing boxing, while I was coasting.
I have to admit, I do get a bit cocky at Bloor sometimes. Right now, I am one of their best boxers.
It is human nature to slack off when you feel there is no need to work. This happens in sports all the time. 'Why should I work on getting better, when I am already the best?'
...because one day someone will come along who is better, and kick your butt all over the place.
That is exactly what happened to me last week. Mr. Big-Shot MMA, whom I poked fun at on this blog, made me look really bad in front of my team mates. Oh, yeah. He wiped up the canvas with my face.
Okay, so I was not at my best, and he got lucky...that time. Now I have an incentive to raise the bar, and be ready for him next time.

In other boxing news, McGrory's Boxing Club in Hamilton has successfully found a new home, after being given the boot from the Normanhurst Community Centre, where they had been since 1965.
I started my boxing career at McGrory's in 1983, with Coach Vinnie Ryan, who is still coaching there.
Last month, the City of Hamilton issued an eviction notice to McGrory's so they can use the space for something else. For the last month, the club feared that it would have to permanently close.
However, St. Ann's Church, a few blocks down the street, has offered a spot for the gym to use.
McGrory's has been saved, thanks to the generosity of the church.

Another reminder, Saturday evening is live boxing at Stockyards. Tickets are $20 at the door, 215 Ryding Avenue (St. Clair and Runnymede).
D-I-T-O Productions will be video recording all of the bouts. Most of the bouts with Stockyards boxers will be available on YouTube within a few days. Other bouts will be uploaded by request only.
Also, the results will be posted here on Sunday.

Here I Sit, Broken Hearted...

-----English------

Here I sit, broken hearted...had a fit, just getting started.

I am still waiting for my specialist to call me in for my official results. I am getting edgy again, because I am so close right now. What the hell is taking so long?
I have cut back my training at Stockyards to one day a week (Wednesday). I am just showing up to let them know that I am still alive. The rest of the week I am doing my training at Bloor.
To be honest, I go to Stockyards for the coaching and sparring, and since I am suspended from doing that, there is really no point in taking the 15-minute bus ride up to Stockyards. I can do shadow boxing and bag work at Bloor, which is only a block away. Once my suspension is lifted, hopefully sometime before the end of the decade, I will return to my regular training schedule.
As I mentioned, I am just waiting for official word from the specialist.
Hurry up.

Yesterday, I did some pad work with Kobe at Bloor. He wants me to work on my hooks. Yeah, I know. My hooks are still sucking like a vacuum cleaner. My hooks are good at close-range, but Kobe is trying to teach me wide hooks, which are a lot harder to execute. Plus, I am still working on my "special" Offensive-Defensive Pivot.

I am also working on a new video series, "Are You Fitter Than A 40-Year-Old?"  (English only). It will involve me inviting people to participate in a series of physical challenges. Every week will be a different challenge.
After training last evening, I did the intro from inside the ring at Bloor Boxing. I did 6 takes, and I am just deciding which one to use. It starts off by me walking across the ring towards the camera, and saying, "I'm Paul 'The Brick' Brec, and here is this week's physical challenge...
I am hoping to have the first challenge out before the end of this month. Look for it on YouTube and www.imissionyou.com within the coming weeks.

BOXING CALENDAR:

November 17, Live boxing at Bloor Boxing and Fitness, 2295 Dundas Street West. (Dundas West--Bloor West, across from Loblaws). Contact the gym for ticket information: 416-535-2699 (English only)

November 24, Live boxing at Stockyards Boxing and Fitness, 215 Ryding Avenue. (Runnymede--St. Clair, behind Metro and Future Shop). Contact the gym for ticket information:  416-766-1348 (English only)

D-I-T-O Productions will be video recording all of the bouts held at Stockyards. If you want to see your bout, please request an upload. Bouts will be professionally edited and uploaded to YouTube within a week.
Remember, we only upload bouts for boxers/coaches who request it. Otherwise, they will be made available for Boxing Ontario officials for review if needed.

As of now, we have had no requests to video record the bouts at Bloor. If that changes, I will let everyone know through this blog.

Je travaille également sur une nouvelle série de vidéos «Are You Fitter Than A 40-Year-Old?»
