Happy New Year

ENTRY 214

MONDAY: Ten rounds total, five rounds focus on offense, five rounds focus on defense, with focus on cardio for all rounds.

Next week will be the last week for sparring before registrations expire. I am hoping to get a lot of sparring in, as there may not be any more until February. At which time I will have to prepare for the card at the end of February. I really hope I get Laidman.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Happy New Year

Not much happened this week, as the gym was closed for most of it.

This will be the last entry for 2014.
I would like to wish all readers Happy New Year.

...Oh an my meeting at work last week was not that big of a deal. They just wanted to tell me in person how happy they were with my performance, and the things I need to do in order to get a promotion.

Like I said, i am just happy they like me. I'm glad someone does.

The Most Depressing Place On Earth, Merry Christmas

Wow. Four sparring sessions this past week. I was able to work on focusing on all different aspects of the sport.

WEDNESDAY: Two rounds with Trainer Junmar. Focus on cardio.
THURSDAY: Six rounds total. Focus on footwork.
FRIDAY: Six rounds total. Focus on offense.

Holidays Are Coming, Are You Ready? I'm Not

As you know, this has been a very busy month for me, and the Holiday season has just kind of sneaked up on me.
What? Its December 20-something already?

I finally put up my "decorations" yesterday:

Yep. That's the extent of the decorations this year...Well, this and a small fibre-optic tree.

It actually took a long time. In addition to the lights not staying up for some reason, something was pissing me off.
Do you want to see what it was?

It was this stupid thing:

It took three hours to get this fucking timer to (not) do what I wanted.

Lights on at 5 PM and off at 3:30 AM.
How fucking difficult is that?
For me, three-hours worth of difficult.
I mean, look at it! Its like master control at Darlington Nuclear Plant!

Its a freaking light timer!
Does it really need so many buttons?

This thing allows you to set a different on/off time for each day of the week.
I don't freaking need that!
On-off, on-off, on-off...lights go on, lights go off, lights go on, lights go off.

Come on! My life is already complicated enough, I don't need this thing to make it worse.

Anyway. The lights are still not going on/off automatically, so there was $12 well spent.
Let's see how far I can throw it.

Now that I have "taken care" of the timer, all I have to do is find a way to keep the lights from falling down every two hours.

Yeah. As usual, nothing works right for me.
Surprised?

The Most Depressing Place On Earth

We all know the Happiest Place On Earth is in Anaheim, California.
However, The Most Depressing Place On Earth is right here in Toronto, Ontario.

It is this place:

The Stockyards location to be exact.

I like to go there occasionally, on the way home from boxing.

I have been there twice since moving, and both times I have wanted to ask, "Who died?"

Really.
Go in there any weekday after 7 PM, and check out the staff.
Wow. Try to get one of them to crack a smile, or even talk with a pleasing tone.
The only happy person in there is the manager, and that is really odd, since it is usually the manager who is the asshole.

I mean, come on people. So you work at Popeyes?
It could be worse. You could be a bus driver.

At least you have a job. Look at how many are unemployed.

Tardy 79A, Or Just Retarded?

Speaking of bus drivers. The 79A was late again on Friday. It was late last Friday, and the Friday before that.
What is it with this bus being late every Friday?
Does the driver have something against Fridays?

Piss me off.
Every other day, I get to the gym before 6 PM. On Friday, it is always after 6 PM, because that damn bus is late.

Of course, I could just walk. I keep forgetting, the boxing gym is now walking distance for me.

...or maybe, the bus could just freaking be on time.
Wow. What a concept!

Rogers, The Bully?

I have been in my new apartment just over three weeks, and the cable TV is finally working properly.
Amazing. It took Rogers four technicians and three weeks to "fix" it.

There was freezing and pixelation, and Channel 475 was not coming on at all.

I was told that the cable inside was crap. A new cable they just put in.
Then, it was the cable coming into the building.
Then, it was the cable within the building.

It turned out to be none of that.
It was the receiver.
Yeah. After all that, the cable box was fucked.
Which is odd in itself, since it worked fine at the old place.

Anyway, long story short, I have the Fight Network back, but I clearly told Rogers that I was not paying for it.
That is a premium channel that I pay extra for, and since for more than half the month it did not work, I am not paying.

Interestingly, they agreed.
Actually, they are giving me three months of free Fight Network.

Here is the thing with Rogers, they are a bully. If you let them, they will try to bully you. However, just like any bully, if you stand up to them, they wall back down and give in.

My next bout with Rogers will be over Blackberry data usage.
I went over my whole 2 GB of threshold, and now they want to charge me $50.

You know what? I'm not paying it.
You know what? I won't have to.

Beatdown time....again.

Service Canada? Yeah, Right

If you remember from my last entry, the fiasco with Employment Insurance?

They called me today.
I was not home, but she wanted me to call her back.
I didn't.
Quite honestly, I really don't feel like dealing with that right now.

I might call in the new year, but I really don't care any more.

I'm working a job I like right now, and speaking of...

And Now For Something Completely Different

On Tuesday, I was called into the office to do a test.
This was one of those tests that companies give their employees to check up on how well they can do the job.
With this test, you had to pass to keep your job.
Yeah. One of those.

I don't know how many companies do that, but the one I work for certainly does.

Anyway, here I am all upset about this test, and sure enough, I get a call from the Operations Manager the following day.

Oh, oh.

He wants me to come back to the office on Tuesday.

Well, as it turned out, I performed so well on the test, that he wants to discuss "other opportunities with the company".

That is really weird, since I just started there. I mean, I have literally not even received my first pay, and they are already offering me something else.
Usually, you have to be with a company for at least three months before you can transfer to another post.

I guess these things can happen, and they do happen. Rarely, and never to me.

On Tuesday, I will find out what they have to offer.

I am not going to say any more about it, because with my luck I will 'jinx' it.

At this point, I am just happy that the company likes me.

Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays

This will be the last entry before Christmas.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. Whatever Holiday you celebrate.
To those of you who celebrate nothing, have a great week.
'See' you next entry, on next Friday or Saturday.

Bloor Fitness Verses Goodlife ???

ENTRY 212

MONDAY:  Four rounds total, focus on offense.

TUESDAY: Six rounds total, focus on defense.

FRIDAY: Ten rounds, One of the busiest sparring days ever, Five rounds focus on defense, and five rounds focus on offense.

I need to get as much sparring in now as I can, since by the end of December, my registration with Boxing Ontario will expire. Richard has informed me to wait until January to re-register, as he is not sure if he will be staying with Boxing Ontario, or switching to Ontario Boxing Association.
Although, some guys have already registered with Boxing Ontario, I can't see Richard switching now.
Although, I would like to get the medical exams out of the way. You know my physician is going to want me to go for a thousand tests before he signs off my form.

The Advantages and Disadvantages Of Living Closer To the Gym

Now living only a few blocks from Stockyards Boxing, means being able to go every day, and I do.
I even went on Thursday, after a massive winter storm.

The annoying part is that there is still a chronic problem with buses being late.

I am a bit pissed, because the TTC apparently fixed the problem with the 191 bus, after I stopped taking it.
Well, thanks, but it does not help me now.

On Thursday, going to the gym, the 79A was 14 minutes late.
Okay, granted, there was a storm, but by the time I left to go to the gym, the roads were pretty-well clear, so, really not an excuse.
Oddly, on Friday the 79A was late again, 12 minutes this time, and definitely no excuse.
That cuts into my training time.
Let's look at this from a boxing perspective. 12 minutes is four rounds. That's my warm-up time. If the bus was 12 minutes late, I don't have time to warm-up. Therefore, if Junmar asks my why I did not warm-up, my answer will be, "Ask the bus driver."

That's not all, coming home from boxing on Friday, I walked over to Jane, to get the 35C. It was also late, and therefore, very crowded.
What was annoying, is that the driver thought it was a huge freaking joke.
Seriously, he was joking about it.
Not so much of a joke if someone gets injured, due to the bus being too crowded, now it is?

You see, I have a special relationship with bus drivers.
I don't like them.

They don't respect the passengers. All they care about is getting their precious lay-over time. Regardless of how it affects the passengers.

Yeah, well, here is the thing. In Ontario, bus drivers are not legally entitled to a break.
Its true. You can look it up in the Employment Standards Act.
Therefore, if a bus driver wants a break, then damn-well get to the terminal early. Otherwise, you forfeit your break.
Too bad, so sad. Let me get the violin.

Malice In Blunderland...Part 26 (or something like that)

Still on the topic of public employees, the poor things, here is a true story from
the world of Service Canada.

Since being laid-off from the previous security company, I have since filed for Employment Insurance.
Okay, so the process takes about six weeks, because the public employees who handle it are really busy [yeah, right].

Anyway, it has been about a month since I filed, and have since found other employment, so I kind of forgot about my EI claim.
Until yesterday, when I received this from Service Canada, redirected to my new address:

Keep in mind while you read these, that I was laid-off due to lack of work.

Note the parts I underlined.
How many times is ¨Voluntary separation" mentioned here?
...and that is just the first two of many pages.

Also note that it is from Mississauga...Do I really need to say more?

Anyway, at this point, I have three options.

1} I can fill out the form properly, as best I can, and let them go through all the trouble of trying to process my claim. Then tell them I have found another job.
2} I can just not bother with it, and let the claim application lapse.
3} I can fill out the form sarcastically, and send it in.

Of course, you all know which one I really want to do.

I don't know what it is, but every time I deal with the Ei people, there is a problem, a mistake on their part.
Applying for Ei is a stressful time in someone's life. They could at least try to make the process as painless as possible.
I know there are rules and laws they have to follow, but it does not help that they make so many mistakes.

Maybe they are doing it on purpose. Maybe they figure if they make the process "difficult", it will discourage people from using it.

I really don't know.
All I know is that once again I am dealing with stupidity.

Bloor Fitness Verses Goodlife Fitness?

The question of the year: Do I stay with Bloor Fitness, or switch to Goodlife Fitness?
Here is the thing. Employees of the security company I am currently with, get a significant discount at Goodlife. Although, I don't know how much yet.

Here is are the 'things': The closest Goodlife to me is at the Sun Life Centre, across from Islington subway station. Which is farther than the travel to Bloor Fitness.
Goodlife does not have boxing facilities.
The last time I was a member at Goodlife, I hated it.
Although, I don't much like the bullshit that goes on at Bloor, I am "established" there, and still know a lot of the other members.
However, if the discount at Goodlife is significant enough to undercut what I pay at Bloor, it may be enough of an incentive for me to switch.

Although, Stockyards Boxing is the closest gym to me, and I have not been to Bloor since moving to Jane Street.
At this point I am thinking, 'Do I need two gym memberships?'

Geez, my life is complicated isn't it?

Hello, From Jane Street

ENTRY 211

FRIDAY:    Six rounds total. Three with Micha, and three with Mark. Focus on offense.

---------------------------------------------------------

First Entry From A New Location

It has been a busy week for "The Brick".
Moving week.
Moved from that dump with the bitch landlord to this new place.

The new apartment is so much larger, twice the size of the other place, and much closer to the boxing gym. I can walk to boxing in 20 minutes, or less than five minutes on the number 79A bus.

As for Bloor Fitness, I am not sure about keeping my membership with them.
It is now a lot less convenient to get there.

It is actually easier to get to at night, than during the day. During day routing, I have to take two buses, 79A and then the 40.
However, for night routing, I only have to take one bus, the 313 Jane gives me door-to-door service.

Also, Bloor Fitness is 24-hours, and there really is no other fitness centre close to me now. Actually, Stockyards Boxing is the closest gym.

I am really not sure what to do, yet.

Right now, my main concern is finishing setting up the apartment, and settling at my new job.

I Stand On Guard For School and Shopping

I am still in security, but for a different company. Still on night shift.
The difference is, I am totally alone at both locations.

On weekends, I am posted at a synagogue with a school attached, and during the week I am at a shopping plaza near Don Mills and York Mills.

Certainly different from what I was doing for that other company.

Other than that, there is not much happening. This time of year is generally slow for boxing, and also Richard is away for the month.

The next boxing card hosted by Stockyards will not be until February, and I am hoping for am opponent from another city.
I would really like to fight Mark Laidman.
I will discuss it with Richard in January.

Photo of the week:

There really is gold at the end of the rainbow.
