Tuesday Sparring With Video

 ENTRY 355

SPARRING REPORT: TUESDAY w/ VIDEO

I did six rounds of sparring on Tuesday.

I generally always video record my sparring sessions for future reference, but I rarely make them available for anyone to watch (on this blog, anyway).

There is really no reason for that except for the amount of space available on this blog.

Since I have nothing else to report today, here are the last four rounds of Tuesday's sparring.

That is all I have for this entry.

Soon I will start training for my next bout. If not in Toronto, it will be in Hamilton.

I will keep you all up to date on my future bouts as I find out more.

New Sparring Sessions !

 ENTRY 354

NEW SPARRING 'CLASSES'

The Toronto Boxing Academy has introduced a sparring session open to all skill levels.
It will be Wednesday afternoons at 5 PM.

That works great for me, because I am there at that time anyway.

For anyone who wants to try boxing, drop by the Toronto Boxing Academy on St. Clair Avenue West, one block east of Runnymede Road. south side. Talk to Brock or any of the great people there for information on how to become part of one of the best sports in the world at one of Toronto's best boxing gyms.

Brock has also scheduled a boxing card to be held on Halloween weekend.

Also, don't forget about my next scheduled bout in the HEAVYWEIGHT division against Scott Turnbull at Mohawk College on December 10.
It has been confirmed, so unless there is a huge emergency, it will be happening.

There is a chance I may also be on Brock's card in October, although it has not yet been officially announced.
Keep checking here for more information.

Tuesday Sparring, More Work On Offense

 ENTRY 353

SPARRING REPORT, TUESDAY

Conservative amount of sparring on Tuesday, only four rounds.
That's okay, because I have not started pre-bout training yet.
If I am on the October 28 card, pre-bout training will start October 4. Otherwise, it will start November 22 for my December 10 bout.
Generally pre-bout training is about three weeks.

I am still working on offense. Although, I am putting some work into defense as well.
I did notice from my last bout that my opponent did get a few too many hits in on my ribs
I will be working more on body defense over the next few weeks, in addition to improving offensive skills.

REMINDER: PROFESSIONAL BOXING THIS WEEKEND

Tix are still available for this Saturday's professional card at Hershey Centre.

Stockyards Anniversary and Durham Boxing Card Soon

 ENTRY 352

SPARRING REPORT, LOTS OF SPARRING

There was a lot of sparring this week.
I did 7 rounds on Saturday morning and 6 rounds on Thursday.

One thing about Coach Brock is that he is really big on sparring, but sparring with a specific purpose.
He will tell you something to work on, and watch you to make sure you do it properly.
That is a good coach.

STOCKYARDS 5th ANNIVERSARY AND DURHAM BOXING SHOW

On October 1, Stockyards will be having its 5th Anniversary show and after-party.
I have been invited, and if I am not working, I will be attending.
I will also be recording the boxing for Metropolis TV.

On October 28, Durham Boxing Academy will be hosting a card at their St. Clair West location.
The card has not been officially announced, but I will post it here once I know.
Hopefully, I will be on the card. If not, I still have a confirmed bout in Hamilton at Mohawk College on December 10.

I invite everyone in the community to come out to both shows and help support amateur sport in the Stockyards community.

'THE BRICK' SAYS GOODBYE TO DOWNTOWN

The security company I work for has found me a new building, after several temporary placements.
To my pleasant surprise, it was not a downtown location.
To be honest, I was getting sick and freaking tired of working downtown. It was very stressful.
My new location is at a new condo near Islington subway station.
The building was finished just about a year ago.
Not only is it not downtown, but it takes only about 20 minutes to get there from where I live.

CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH

I went for my annual check-up last month, and got the results from my physician last week.

Great news. Both my blood and urine tests have turned up negative.
My ECG was normal (for a 30 year-old).
This just goes to prove the importance of regular exercise and a decent diet.
Even at my age, diet and exercise are the cures for everything.

'THE BRICK' INVITED TO "CANDID CONVERSATIONS"

A friend of mine, Cliff T., hosts a blog called "Candid Conversations".
He has invited me to an interview for the 7th Anniversary of his blog.
I am not sure what we are going to talk about, but I thank him very much for the invitation.
Once that blog entry is posted there will be a link here.

Should I Stay Or Should I Go ?

 ENTRY 351

SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO ? (BOXING ONTARIO)

Apparently.I am suspended by Boxing Ontario until the end of this year.
However, I may be able to re-apply for 2017.
Although, I am quite happy will the OBA.
If I am not allowed to train at a Boxing Ontario gym for the rest of the year, I want to be refunded the balance of the fee I payed to Boxing Ontario. Captain Obvious.

I am still not even sure if I will try Boxing Ontario again, or stay with the Ontario Boxing Association for 2017.

So far the OBA and WBC have been great and Brock Arthur has been a really good coach, but is it too soon to tell?

Brock has a bout lined up for December, and is trying to get me on his local card in October.

If I can get on October's card as well, that will have given me three bouts in a five month period, compared to the one I had previously through Richard's gym.
Part of the reason for this is the fact that Brock and the OBA officials are not as hard-assed about getting opponents.
As I mentioned in a previous entry, it is about getting the athletes to compete.
This is amateur boxing. It is about getting in there and testing your skills.
It is not always about winning. Although winning is nice.

Of course athletes train to win, but at the amateur level it is not as if you get paid for winning. Have some fun with it. Test yourself, and learn from your mistakes.

My question is, what does the future hold?

I still have over three months with the OBA, so I will just go with it and see what happens.

In the meantime I will be on the lookout for more opponents.

As a footnote, I have a friend in Kingston in Masters division who is looking for someone to box in Kingston in October, as this will be his last bout (He is retiring from boxing). I can't box him because he is sanctioned by Boxing Ontario.
If you are registered with Boxing Ontario, and interested in a match in Kingston on October 20 with a Master, let me know and I will forward it to him.

Bringing It To Hamilton...Again !

 ENTRY 350

NEXT BOUT IN DECEMBER..MAYBE SOONER

My next bout has already been confirmed.

Brock could not find an opponent for October 7, but did find one for December 10.

It will be in Hamilton at Mohawk College, verses Scott Turnbull.

Although, Brock is planing a local show with a tentative date, I may be on that one as well.
That card is scheduled for late October or early November.

I don`t know what will be happening early next year, except that I have spoken with Coach Brock, and I will be registering for the OBA Golden Gloves in March or April.

Right now I am still undecided, but chances are good that I will be staying with the Ontario Boxing Association. Especially if Brock can keep getting me decent opponents.

Also, I have been very happy with the OBA.
They seem to be much more laid-back than Boxing Ontario.
Boxing Ontario tends to be too bureaucratic and anal at times.
The goal of the OBA is to get people to complete, and that really is the whole idea of sport.

Sherry and Brodie and the rest do a great job at keeping such a wonderful organization running.

Also, right now they are offering a really good deal for club memberships.
It is a lot less than the Boxing Ontario club fee. It is actually an unbelievable reasonable fee.
This is a great time for boxing gyms to join the OBA.
Also, OBA boxers pay a lower yearly fee than with Boxing Ontario.

Contact the Ontario Boxing Association for more information on how your gym can join.

No News Is Good News ?

 ENTRY 349

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS...I GUESS

I still have not heard anything from Boxing Ontario.
That may be a good thing. Although, I`m sure I will hear something soon.

Some were wondering if I was still boxing.
Yes. I am, but just not under Boxing Ontario sanction.

I have been training at Toronto Boxing Academy (Officially known as Durham Boxing Academy), so I am still getting regular training.

Coach Brock may have a bout for me on October 7 in Mississauga, and possible at the beginning of November at the Toronto Boxing Academy, both under WBC (OBA) sanction.

Brock has been working with me a lot and seems to be very serious about getting me in the ring.

It would be great if I could get one more bout before the end of the year, but two would be awesome.

I am still going to train for the WBC Golden Gloves happening early next year.

So far things are working out quite well at Brock`s gym.
Although, I still want to be in Boxing Ontario`s good book just so I have something to fall back on.

One I am confirmed for my next bout, I will start pre-bout training and diet.

Right now, I am staying in regular training and diet.

SURPRISE WEIGHT DROP

Despite the fact that I was away for Labour Day weekend, and I went a bit nuts with eating, I lost 4 pounds.
The goal for my next bout is 170 lbs.
I am 4 lbs. away from my goal.

I have found that when I try to lose weight, I am generally unsuccessful.
Maybe I have found the secret. Not to kill myself at trying to lose, but just let it happen naturally. As long as I keep up what I am currently doing, because it is obviously working.

PRO CARD SOON IN MISSISSAUGA

Coach Brock in addition to a friend of mine, Luis Valdivia, will be on the professional card on September 24 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.
A good night of professional boxing put on by the great people at United Boxing Promotions.
Please come out to cheer on these great hard-working athletes.
