Feels So...Odd

 ENTRY 348

IT JUST FEELS ODD

It feels odd not training at Stockyards.
I have still not heard anything from Boxing Ontario.

There is a lot I really want to say about this whole ordeal, but it is best not said at this time.

In addition to getting the boot from Boxing Ontario, I have been laid-off.
Plus, my dad was in the hospital with some internal bleeding.

Not a good week for 'The Brick'.

Have I hit bottom, yet?
Maybe I should start my own Fight Club.
That might help.
(Bad film reference)

Sorry for the short entry, but with not much training, I do not have much to report.

GOING AWAY FOR LABOUR DAY

Myself and Michele will be in Hamilton for four days starting Thursday.
To all my Hamilton people, if anyone wants to meet up, let me know.

As a result of being away, there will be no blog entry this Friday, and also no live broadcast of 'After Midnight'.

Regular publication of this blog will continue on Tuesday September 6.
"After Midnight With The Brick" will return TBA.
Since I don't know when I will be returning to work, and what my new schedule will be, "After Midnight" is on hiatus.
However, there will be programming on RADIO C \65 throughout.

Keep in touch for updates.

MESSAGE TO ALL ATHLETES: ALWAYS FOLLOW THE RULES

 ENTRY 347

TO ALL ATHLETES: ALWAYS FOLLOW THE RULES

I am writing this message as a note to all athletes, not just boxers.

Society has rules, called laws. They exist to prevent chaos.
It is your responsibility to know the rules of society and follow them, as to not follow them will result in consequences.

Athletes who compete in organized sports have an organization or league who are in charge of competition.
These organizations also have rules just like in general society.
Also, like with society's rules, there are penalties for not following them.

On Wednesday, I was suspended by Boxing Ontario, and as a result will no longer be able to participate in any event sanctioned by Boxing Ontario, nor am I allowed to train at Stockyards Gym for the duration of the suspension.

The reason for this was that my last bout was at an event that was not sanctioned by Boxing Ontario, and I went without their permission. Although, the event was sanctioned by another organization, such an activity is not allowed under Boxing Ontario rules.

This could very well turn out to be a permanent ban.

There is going to be a hearing next week to determine the length of the suspension.

In summary, if you are an athlete in competition and you want to do something that you think might be against league rules, check with league officials before doing it.

I am not making any comments on this case until after the hearing.

In the meantime, I am still doing some basic training, but I can not train with Coach Richard.

Once I get the results of the hearing, I will share them here.

Not My Best Performance = Epic Fail

 ENTRY 346

NOT MY BEST PERFORMANCE = EPIC FAIL

I have to admit that Saturday was not my best day in the ring.
Actually, I stunk.

A lot of things threw me off.

A huge ring for one thing. It was twice the size of any ring I have ever been in.
When you are used to a ring, you know how and where to move. Having a large ring does not mean more room to run around.  It kind of throws off your movement.
Second, two minute rounds. This is different from the one-and-a-half minutes that I am used to. If you think that is not much difference, try throwing punches and ducking constantly for 30 seconds, and see how difficult it is.
Third, smaller gloves. Under Boxing Canada rules, Masters use 16 oz. gloves for competition. However with the WBC, Masters compete using 12 oz. gloves. That means less padding between fist and face and fist and body. Let me put it this way, it really hurts being on the receiving end of a 12 oz. glove.
Also, wearing 12 oz. gloves when you are not used to it can throw off your timing. Since you are used to having the extra weight on your arms.

In addition to being in a different city, at a different venue, with a new coach in my corner, and nobody but part of the Durham Boxing Team (4 people) to cheer for me.

Are these excuses? Poor excuses?
Maybe.

In all honesty, none of these should really affect performance that much.

I could have done better.
I forgot almost all that Coach told me.
However, it got to the point where I was only concerned about surviving and not winning.

Although, my opponent was really good.
I found out after that he is ex-military. He learned how to box in the military.
This is an opponent Richard would never have allowed me in the ring with.
Brock did, and I appreciate the chance.
As I have mentioned many times before, you don't get better against opponents who are not as good. You have to have tough opponents some times so you can improve yourself.

Although I did not win on the score cards, it is still a victory.
I knew from midway through the second round that there was no way I was going to win against this guy. However, if I was going to accept defeat, I would do so with dignity.
This guy gave me his all. He hit me really hard. I was hit harder than ever before. Every punch that landed, I felt, and it hurt.
This guy was really tough. I nailed him a few times with a right cross directly on his jaw, and I may as well have just tapped him on the shoulder.
He had me on the ropes at least twice.
He was relentless. He had one job. That was to finish me before the final bell.
He didn't.
I did not quit.
I stood up to this ex-military guy in the ring for six minutes, and I did not take any of his shit.
He may have got in quite a few good and painful shots, but so did I.

It is also interesting to note that he also lost a point for holding. Although, it did not really make any difference as I was so far behind on points anyway.

I came out of there after three brutal rounds, and was checked by the ringside physician, and I was perfectly fine.
I just finished the first semester of the School of Hard Knocks. Big deal.

There are guys out there who couldn't or wouldn't do that. They would be running home to momma. There is a name for that. It is called 'Pussy Syndrome'. More guys have it than care to admit.
So, before any of you decide to make some stupid dumbass comment, think about it.
I don't see any of you doing this.

I don't run and I don't quit.
Quitting is worse than losing.
At least if you try but you don't win, you can still say 'I tried'.
If you quit, you didn't even try, and how can you better yourself if you don't at least try?
Besides, you learn from losing.

All that being considered, this a victory for me.

I did win a few trophies though:
-Bruised rib cage on both sides.
-A nice shiner around my right eye with some red marks (almost cuts).
-Painful jaw on both sides.
-The bridge of my nose is sore when I touch it.

Those are going to be around for a while.
Big deal. Battle wounds. Signs of manhood.

Once again, I want to thank Coach Brock of the Durham Boxing Academy for this opportunity that I would not have had with Stockyards.

See, Richard. I had a tough opponent, and I am still alive!

Unfortunately, I could not get anyone to video record or photograph this match, so I can not show it to you. Although, this may be one that I don't want to show.

I would like to do it again sometime. Maybe in October (hint).

SPARRING REPORT: MONDAY

Probably not my best judgement, but I sparred six rounds on Monday at Stockyards.
It really did not bother me. I thought I would be sore and tired, but I wasn't. That one day break was all I needed. I was as fresh as a freshly-changed baby's butt.

As for my war wounds, I didn't really get hit that much during sparring, so they were not affected.

Maybe some light sparing on Tuesday at Toronto Boxing Academy.
I obviously still have things to work on.
I will need to talk to Coach Brock to find out what he suggests. This is the time when I wish I had a video recording of the bout.

My Life Was In A Rut, Open Doors Would Soon Be Shut

 ENTRY 345

LAST ENTRY BEFORE HAMILTON BOUT

This will be the last you hear from 'The Brick' until after my big bout in Hamilton on Saturday. As is common practice for me, I do not blog the day before a bout, so I can concentrate on getting ready.
Anyone interested in coming out to see some great boxing, it is this Saturday afternoon at about 2 PM at 595 Catharine Street North. As of now there are 15 bouts scheduled. My bout is right in the middle at bout 7.

THE FUTURE OF 'THE BRICK': MY LIFE IS IN A RUT

What are my (boxing) plans?
I would like to do at least one more competition this year (after Hamilton).
Brock has been discussing about hosting another show at Toronto Boxing Academy in October. I would like to be in that (hint).
Other than that, I would like to be in about four shows per year and at least one major tournament each year.
If I decide to register with OBA next year, their Golden Gloves are in March or April. I want to be in that. Then if I get into four other shows, I will be happy.
The younger guys get into the ring at least once per month. I realize that it is more difficult for Masters, so I feel that four times per year for me is not unreasonable.
It is a matter of not being overly picky about opponents.
Richard is really bad for that. He wants the match-up to be exact. Unfortunately, that is not possible with Masters. Of course, you try to get as close as possible. You don't want a slaughter in the ring. However, Richard tends to be a bit too picky at times.
Within 10 pounds and 3 bouts difference between boxers should be acceptable. One of the reasons Richard turned down Orangeville, was that my opponent was six pounds heavier. Big deal.
Right now it seems that Brock is not that fussy about opponents.
My concern with him is that will he train me only for this one bout and then forget about me, or does he understand that I want to keep competing for another couple of years?

Right now I am trying to decide between Coach Richard or Coach Brock, because come 2017, I will have to make up my mind.
It will basically depend on how happy I am with the overall quality of coaching, and which one can get me into the ring more often.

So far, Coach Brock has been an awesome coach. I told him that he had to earn the prefix 'coach'.
It did not take that long.

Going to Hamilton for my first bout with Brock in my corner and practically alone, is a big leap for me. Also, as I mentioned in a previous entry, a very scary experience.
I am not afraid of stepping into the ring to face any man, because I fear no man. It is just the idea of my first time boxing outside of Toronto, outside of the George Bell Arena for that matter. Plus having a different coach, and at a different type of venue.
This was also supposed to be an outdoor venue, but it has been forecast for rain on Saturday, so there goes that idea.
It is supposed to be hot though. 30 degrees. Perfect boxing weather.

I am doing this because sometimes in life we get stuck in a rut, and have to make changes in order to better ourselves. Close old chapters of our lives and open new ones, but in many cases there is uncertainty within those new chapters.
It is like the song 'Solsbury Hill'.

Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Though my life was in a rut
Till I thought of what I'd say
And which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom, boom, boom
Son, he said, grab your things I've come to take you home

That is my life right now.

Every time I hear that song play on the radio, I actually get somewhat emotional.
BOOM 97.3 needs to play that more at night (hint).

My heart really is going boom, boom, boom right now.

SPARRING REPORT: MONDAY, AND MORE

I did a few rounds of in-ring technical work with a professional boxer at Stockyards on Monday.
Tuesday there should be some more sparring at Toronto Boxing.
I would like to do some light training on Thursday morning. Brock wants me in to train in the afternoon, but I will be going into Hamilton on Thursday afternoon.

RADIO C \65, LOOKING FOR PROGRAMMING

The resurrection of "After Midnight With the Brick" has been a success. Listeners have been steadily increasing to the point where we are now rebroadcasting the program several times per week.
We still have a lot of time slots to fill, and we are still looking for new and unique ideas for programming. If you have an idea for a program for Radio C \65, we would like to hear from you.

Our St. Clair West studio was knocked out during the storm we had a few days ago, and there was some minor equipment damage. We will not be streaming from St. Clair for at least a few more days. Also, there will be no live broadcast of 'After Midnight' this weekend as I will be in Hamilton (obviously), and our studio on St. Clair Ave. W. will be shut down for repairs and upgrades. However, we will be uploading some programming to the server in Montreal, so there will be programming for this weekend.

To listen to the stream, press the PLAY on the Radio C \65 box to the right of this blog. If the PLAY does not work, it means that we are not streaming any programming at that time.

Thank you to those who have been supporting our new radio station.

STOCKYARDS vs. TORONTO BOXING ACADEMY CURRENT SCORES

To make it interesting, let's do a running score. Just because you all know how amazingly off-the-scale competitive I am.
Which ever coach has the highest score when it comes time for me to decide which gym to stay at (undetermined, but likely by the end of October), that coach will win.

Both coaches will start with 10 points, and points will be added or deducted depending on what happens over the next couple of months.

Here are the current scores, as of August 16:

Coach Richard lost 2 points for turning down Orangeville, but gained a point for strangely and suddenly taking more of an interest in coaching me.
Coach Brock gained 2 points for finding me a bout so quickly.

COACH RICHARD (STOCKYARDS)    9 POINTS
COACH BROCK (TORONTO BOXING)  12 POINTS

Lots Of Sparring For A Tired Boxer

 ENTRY 344

SPARRING REPORT: LOTS OF SPARRING ON THURSDAY MORNING

I did a lot of sparring on Thursday morning at Toronto Boxing Academy.
So much that I lost count of how many rounds. I know I did at least 10 rounds,
I went in right after work, so I had no sleep. I did quite well for someone who got no sleep for over 12 hours.

More sparring on Monday at Stockyards, I hope, and more on Tuesday at Toronto Boxing.
I really would like to get a few rounds in on Thursday, not a lot, but just a 'refresher' before my big bout on Saturday.

One again, please come out on August 20 to support 'The Brick's' first bout away from Toronto.

Half Of The Beans Have Been Spilled, Here Is The Other Half

 ENTRY 343

SPARRING REPORT: MONDAY AND TUESDAY

I did some ring work with a professional boxer at Stockyards on Monday, and five rounds of sparring on Tuesday at Toronto Boxing Academy.
In an odd change of schedule for me, I have been asked to come in for sparring on Thursday morning at Toronto Boxing, as there will apparently be a lot of guys there for sparring and Brock wants me o get as much work in as possible before my big bout in Hamilton, which is now less than two weeks away.

HALF OF THE BEANS HAVE BEEN SPILLED, HERE IS THE OTHER HALF

Well, part of my big announcement has already been made.
Last entry I announced that I will be competing in Hamilton on August 20.
You may have also noticed that I am currently training at two boxing gyms.
In addition to still training at Stockyards, I have also started training at the Toronto Boxing Academy.
I am training two days a week at both. I am training Monday and Wednesday at Stockyards, and at Toronto Boxing on Tuesday and Thursday. Before a bout, I also train Saturday mornings at Toronto Boxing. On Fridays, I do cardio and weight training at Bloor Fitness.
A total of six times per week for pre-bout, and five times per week during regular training.

I am doing this to decide if I want to stay at Stockyards for next year, or switch to Toronto Boxing Academy full time starting the new year.
My coach at the Toronto Boxing is Brock Arthur. A current professional boxer whose next bout is scheduled for September 24 at the Hershey Centre.

I met Brock about a month ago when I saw a poster at a bus shelter for a boxing show he was putting on. His gym is located literally just one block from Stockyards. I went in to ask if he wanted someone to video record. At that time I also told him that I was also an active boxer and showed him my April 30 bout...and it just went from there.

Brock is responsible for getting me the bout at "Banger In the Hangar" in Hamilton on August 20.
My opponent will be Ismet Nejat Shukri.
As I mentioned in the last entry, I will practically be all alone for this one, so supporters of 'The Brick' in the Hamilton area, please come out and show your support. I will need all that I can get.

Jumping Into the Shark Tank

 ENTRY 342

SPARRING REPORT: TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY

Four rounds on Tuesday at Toronto Boxing Academy and two rounds on Wednesday at Stockyards.
No gym on Monday as it was a holiday, and no sparring on Thursday but I will be going into Toronto Boxing on Saturday morning for training and sparring.

JUMPING INTO THE SHARK TANK

There comes a time when we have to make a major decision in our lives.
I had the chance to compete in Hamilton on August 20 at an event called 'Banger In the Hangar'.
I have decided to go for it.
I do have to say that this is a very scary experience. Yes. You read that correctly.
I am not normally afraid of anything, but this is a major, perhaps a life-changing experience.
First of all, this will be my first time competing away from Toronto. It will be in Hamilton.
There will also be with a different coach in my corner. A coach whom I have only been working with for just over a month.
That means walking into an already hostile environment with a coach I hardly know, and with very little support from the audience.
It will be like diving into a tank full of sharks.
It will also be a different type of venue. It will be outdoors. I am used to the nice, comfortable ring inside the George Bell Arena.
For this whole experience, I will have very little in my favor.

Some may ask why I am doing this.
The reason for this decision is that we do not advance in life standing in a rut.
Sometimes we need to jump in with the sharks. It is the only way we can advance, raise the bar as you will.

Readers of this blog in the Hamilton area, please come out on August 20 at 2 PM to show your support for 'The Brick', at the Navy League of Hamilton, 595 Catharine Street North.
There are 14 exciting bouts scheduled including mine.
