"Protect Your Side":

   ENTRY 492 | March 31 /2023

SPARRING REPORT: WEDNESDAY

I was not able to get to the gym on Friday due to being sick. You know I must be really ill to miss a gym day. Therefore, Wednesday was my only gym day this week.
I did seven rounds of sparring on Wednesday including an interesting drill introduced by Coach Johnny.
We would split the ring in half and have three guys in at the same time.  The idea is to "protect" your side of the ring.  When the third guy gets into our side, you jump on him. When he gets to the other side, the other guy gets a go at him.
An interesting and fun drill.

I am still not at 1000% so I am going to keep this post short.
That's all for this week.

Let's Do the Time Warp Again

   ENTRY 491 | March 24 /2023

IT'S JUST A STEP TO THE RIGHT

Coach Johnny had me once again work on the "Step Right" move during sparring.
I like that move a lot. He also had me work on the jab because I apparently don't use it enough. I think I jabbed my arm right off this week.

I sparred a total of 11 rounds this week, which aligns with my goals.
On Wednesday, I sparred with a new guy. It was his first time in the ring.  At one point I clocked him really well with a straight right to the jaw. I know how intimidating it is to spar for the first time and it was not my intention to do that. I saw an opening and I instinctively went for it.
He returned on Friday but left just before sparring started. I guess he didn't want any more of 'The Brick'.

The morning class with Coach Johnny is getting really busy. We had a record of 11 participants on Friday.  That's good and Johnny is a good coach. One of the best I have had. All of the coaches at Cabbagetown are good but I seem to have some kind of an athlete-to-coach rapport with him that I don't seem to have with other coaches. It doesn't;t mean that other coaches are not good, it just means...well, I really don't know, but Jonny and I get along really well and I appreciate his help.

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN

On March 29 I will be getting a year older and thus a year closer to death but that isn't going to stop me.
I'm still fast in the ring.
Catch me if you can.

Step Aside: The Best Defense Against A Jab

   ENTRY 490 | March 17 /2023

JUST STEP ASIDE

Coach Johnny worked with me this week on something new and then had me try it while sparring and it worked very well.
He said that to defend against a jab, to step to the right and then throw a straight right.
We drilled this during pad work and then he wanted me to try it during sparring and it worked every time.
It is just a single step to the right (opponent's left) and then immediately throwing a straight right to the head, He will completely miss you with his jab and you will almost always nail him in the head with the right provided that your timing is dead-on. Of course, this will only work if your opponent is in an Orthodox stance.

Once again an excellent idea from a great coach.
That's why I travel halfway across the city to attend the Cabbagetown Boxing Club,

"THE TALBOT HILLS MEMOIRS"

My latest e-novel that I had been working on throughout the pandemic is now about to begin proofreading.

"The Talbot Hills Memoirs" continues to follow the character of Jake Islington (who has not revealed his last name until now).
In this installment, Jake works as the assistant to the mayor of a small city of 100,000 by the name of Talbot Hills.
In this 20-chapter comedic novel, we follow Jake after he discovers that the city has a budget surplus of almost a million dollars.
How well will he handle it?

This e-novel is set for public publication by mid-August.

WELCOME NEW CABBAGETOWN MEMBERS

Friday's class with Coach Johnny was really busy. There were 11 in attendance including myself and there were three "rookies".
I can always tell a beginner by the way they stand. Beginners never stand properly. They are often flat-footed.
It was also an all-guys day at the Cabbagetown Boxing Club as well.

A big welcome to the Cabbagetown newbies. Welcome to the "Crew".

SPARRING REPORT: WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY

Ten rounds total this week, which is my goal. It was a lot of hard work as I was specifically working on the things the coach and I worked on.
The coach has been very happy with my progress, He joked and said, "Of all the years I have been coaching, sometimes I get something right". At least I think he was joking. Either that, or he was being modest.

BOXING IS RETURNING TO THE BIG SCREEN, BIG TIME

This past Thursday I was finally able to catch "Creed III" in the theatre.
I have to say that it was okay, but really nothing special. I will give it a five out of ten.
It started slow but picked up speed about halfway through. A former friend of Andonis appears out of nowhere who was an amateur boxer and decides that he wants to become a professional and go for the title. He of course gets that opportunity, because: movie.
His opponent is no doubt Adonis and, look out, big spoiler alert coming, Adonis wins. We all saw that coming around the corner, didn't we?

I was not totally impressed with that one. However, there is another boxing movie being released soon in North America.
It is a biography of George Foreman and it sounds quite interesting.

It is set for release to the North American market on April 28 of this year.
See the detail on imdb.com HERE.

"Rocky 4" Is Not That Great (No Kidding)

   ENTRY 489 | March 10 /2023

SPARRING REPORT: FRIDAY

I did five rounds of sparring on Friday and the coach was quite impressed and so was I.
I am generally very critical of my sparring results, but I was quite pleased with how I did on Friday.
The coach continued to work with me on the "left...left...left" and wanted me to practice it while sparring. I was also trying to get a check hook in, but I found it difficult to do. Just like with everything else, it is easier to do shadow boxing than while sparring, but that is the whole idea of sparring.

Coach has been on me about using the jab more to push my opponent to the ropes and I successfully did that, twice. I then went crazy on the body -- excellent.

I like it when a plan comes together.

YOUTUBE LIKES THAT NOW OR HOW I MANAGED TO TEAR APART MOVIES ABOUT BOXING

I was finally able to upload a video to my new YouTube channel "The Brick".
This new channel will feature me reacting to films and TV about boxing and the inaccuracies of most of them.
I was able to get by the copyright issue by explaining that it was a situation of "fair usage". Although, I don't see why I needed to do that. It was obviously a "fair usage", but anyway...

The first film I picked on was "Rocky 4". It was absolutely one of the worst for being inaccurate in its portrayal of boxing. Not to mention how poor of a boxer Rocky really was.

Going forward, I will be producing a video weekly with each featuring my commentary on a film, TV show or other, that has mistakes about boxing or otherwise.

Check out the first video hers, as I tear right into "Rocky 4" (1985): HERE

Also, if there is a boxing film, TV, or video of any kind you would like me to consider reviewing, submit it to me and I will have a look.

YouTube Doesn't Like That

   ENTRY 488 | March 3 /2023

SPARRING REPORT: WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY

I did some target pad work with Coach Johnny. We continued to work on the "left...left...left", and he introduced a new one: Slip, upper, hook, right. I like that he is now throwing in some more defensive moves. We also worked on, duck, jab and come back with a right.
After that, he had me practice all of those while sparring. I tell you, there is a big difference between practicing on the pads and practicing while sparring.
.

YOUTUBE DOESN'T LIKE THAT

I had a fantastic idea that I would make videos about the inaccuracies of boxing in movies and TV shows because there are a lot of them and they rea;;y bother me.
I made a few videos and uploaded the to YouTube, and then they blocked all of them because they contained copyrighted material. Well, yeah, of course. No shit Sherlock.  That is the whole idea of doing a review. You are allowed to use copyrighted material for the purpose of commentary as long as you don't use all of it. You can use segments and talk about it. That is called "fair usage".
Apparently, YouTube doesn't allow that, but strangely enough, they allow Cinema Sins and Minty to do the exact same thing, but for some reason, I am not allowed.
I guess I am not kissing the right asses.

Anyway, I am looking for another host for these videos because obviously, YouTube is useless.
YouTube is owned by Google, so that explains a lot.
