Sparring Coach Brock

 ENTRY 364

SPARRING REPORT

I did some training with Coach Brock on Saturday.
He gave me a few pointers including how to get out of a clinch against the ropes.
Very helpful.
Plus, I am working on my own set of surprises for Mr.Turnbull.

This has been a rough year for me in boxing, and I am not going to let the year end with another loss.

VIDEOGRAPHER NEEDED

Anyone with video experience, especially with covering sports, is asked to contact me to cover the Seasons Beatings event at Mohawk College.

That is all I have for this post.
I am going to be starting pre-bout training in a couple of weeks, and I do not want to reveal any of my training techniques.

If you want to see how I trained, come to the event on December 10.

Movin' On East

 ENTRY 363

A CHANGE IN WORK SCHEDULE MEANS MORE TRAINING TIME

One thing about where I work is that they are (usually) very cooperative with the employees.

My employer and practically all of my co-workers know that I am an active boxer.
My work will always give me time off to compete, but it is generally a pain in the butt, because I have to make sure they have enough notice and then I usually can not make up the time so I end up losing a shift. Then there is the worry that there might be a screw-up. Although, there has not been, yet.

I had been requesting Saturdays off for a while since competitions are usually always on a Saturday, plus Brock's gym always has good sparring sessions on Saturday mornings that I have been missing due to having to work. Unless they stay later, and I go after work. However, that does not always happen, and I would really like to go every Saturday.

In addition to that, I also work Sunday. That means that I never get a complete weekend off.

A few days ago, my supervisor handed me a schedule revision.
He said, "I think you will like this"

The revision has me working Sunday afternoon, Monday afternoon, Tuesday overnight, and Wednesday overnight. With Thursday, Friday, and SATURDAY off.

With this new work schedule, I can still train at all my regular times, plus be able to go in EVERY Saturday morning.

The new schedule will take affect in three weeks, and works out perfect for me to start pre-bout training for December 10.

I have been working for that company for 15 months at three different locations and all with varying degrees of 'pain in the ass'.
At this point, I have finally earned my Saturdays off !

See you on Saturdays for sparring. Ha-ha !

SPARRING REPORT

There is no sparring report for this week, because I have not done any yet.
I definitely need more ring time. There are still a few things I need to work on.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I want my last bout of the year to end with a big "W".
For myself, for the coaches, and for Team Durham Boxing Academy.

'THE BRICK' MAY BE MOVIN' ON EAST

One of the disadvantages of training at Stockyards Boxing was that I was stuck in a rut. I really couldn't do much. I was very restricted at what I could do, in boxing and other aspects of my life as well.
As my regular followers know, lately I have been getting sick and freaking tired of Toronto bullshit. It is getting worse. There really is not enough room here to go into all the details now, but I have been thinking about hauling ass out of this shitty city.

Plans, of course, were to 'retire' in Hamilton, but that is not for a while.
I mean, I am not even ready to retire from boxing.

Moving to Hamilton now would mean having to leave my job, and to leave Brock as a coach.
I am not ready to leave Brock's gym. He has been a great coach to me, and I have a lot of (boxing) plans that I would like to do with Coach Brock in my corner.

Well, my little road trip to Durham last week sparked an idea.

Move to Pickering.
I can train at Brock's Ajax location, and I am still close enough to Toronto to keep my job without having to put up will Toronto bullshit.

Well, that did not quite work out.
While searching for apartments in Pickering and Ajax and Whitby, I discovered that rents in these places is ridiculously high.
I don't know why.

However, while  checking rents in Oshawa, I discovered they were quite reasonable.
Depending on where you live, and understanding that Ontario is an expensive province,
I found quite a few nice sized apartments in nice buildings and in decent areas with rents around $800.
That is about $200 less than what I am paying to live in Shitty City in a building with Superintendent Numbnuts who doesn't do 'F'-all except complain.

This whole idea of getting the "F" out of Toronto is swirling around up there,
Oshawa is quite far from Toronto. but not quite as far as Hamilton, and not "impossibly" far.

If it does happen, I will wait until spring.
Nobody wants to move in winter.

No Exhibition?!

 ENTRY 362

NO EXHIBITION FOR 'THE BRICK'

My exhibition match at Toronto Boxing Academy that was scheduled to happen on October 29 has been cancelled.
Actually, the whole even has been cancelled.

Note to all: No card at Toronto Boxing Academy on Halloween weekend. The event will be re-scheduled for a later date.

Therefore, there will be no preparation for December 10, except sparring.
...and pre-bout training of course.
Pre-bout training for 'Seasons Beatings' will begin on November 21. Three weeks prior to the match.

I did some sparring in Ajax on Wednesday.
I could for sure tell what I needed to work on.
Still need to tweak my offence.
Plus, the guy I sparred was really fast. He was a bit younger, so my opponent will likely not be as fast (We Masters are as slow a molasses in January), but still speed is still good to have. It is a very valuable asset in the boxing ring.

There is still lots of time to prepare, but as I mentioned in a previous post, I want to finish this year with a "W".

I am not sure if Brock is going to reschedule an exhibition for me early next year.
We have also already discussed me going to the OBA Golden Gloves, and the Ringside Masters Tournament (Date and location to be announced)..
That is really good news, as I have never been in a major tournament. For some reason when I was with Boxing Ontario, I could not get into any tournaments.

It looks like I will be staying with OBA/WBC for another year, and so far Brock Arthur has been a very decent coach.

This is another reason why I want a win so badly.
When an athlete wins, the coach also wins.
Brock has coached his butt off, so I feel I owe it to him to get a win.

Painful In Pickering

 ENTRY 361

PAINFUL IN PICKERING

I have to say that it was a rather painful trip to and from the Pickering/Ajax area today.

There was nothing wrong once I was there, but travelling by pubic transit....never again.

It took three hours each way. That was six hours out of my day just 'travelling', and it was actually mostly waiting.

I would like to do it again, but the next time I am renting a car.

..and they can't figure out why people don't like using public transit.
I don't know. No idea.
Idiots.

Going there, I went to Pickering station, and that station literally does not have any signage for the Durham buses.
I could not find where the buses stopped, so I ended up walking from Pickering station to Brock Road. Not that far, about a 15 minute walk along Bayly Street.
That was once I figure out which direction to walk. I started walking the wrong way (Towards Toronto).

It  was not 3 km, and did not take over 30 minutes.
I did not go the stupid way it shows on the map.
You do not have to cross Hwy 401. You can walk out the front of the station right onto Bayly Street.
I really don't know why it gives that dumb direction.

I was getting frustrated, but I have to say I was happy to see this:

I went to the Warrior Fight store at 981 Brock Road, and to my dismay they also had a very poor selection of shoes in my size.

Thay actually only had one model, blue Adidas Combat Speed for $99.

I bought those, and a new gym bag to replace the one that was falling apart. I got this huge Rival Boxing bag for $65.
Yeah, that is a lot for a bag, but it holds all my gear and then some.

I have to say that the person working in there was very friendly and helpful, but not at all pushy.

I am going to need more gear before my December bout, so I will be going back there...by car.

After I finished at the store, Decided that I did not want to walk to Ajax, so I took the Durham Transit. It was only a few minutes wait.

I took the 223 to Ajax station, and then walked to Durham Boxing Academy.
Another mistake.

From what I could tell from Google Maps, Station Street is very close to Ajax station.

Looks easy, doesn't it?

Misleading.

Station Street does not go all the way to Ajax station.
You have to walk along Fairall Street right to the end.
There you are met with a sign: Station Street, in three directions.
Yes. Three directions off of Fairall Street.

I had to guess which direct to take, and of course my first choice was the wrong one.

After finally arriving at Brock's other gym at just past 3:30, I ended up staying for almost three hours.

I did six rounds of sparring with a really fast younger guy.
I need a lot more of that. My opponent in December is not going to be standing still.

I left the gym at 6:30. and arrived back at my Toronto apartment just before 9:30.
Yep.
Next time...car...Note to self: Rent a car, damn it!

Wednesday October 19, 2016, will go down in history as one of 'The Brick's' most adventurous days.

One side note:
I noticed something very interesting in Pickering that Ajax, and even Toronto doesn't have.

Every couple of blocks was a tall pole with a bunch of loudspeakers pointing in all directions.

Anyway, I found out that this is a public alert alarm for if something happens at the power plant.
You know, people of Pickering. Those sirens will not do you any damn good.
If something does happen, you will have a grand total of maybe five minutes maximum after those sirens sound to haul ass, before it melts.
...but on the other hand, you will take Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, and Toronto with you, and none of those places have sirens.

Remember Chernobyl?

This is Pickering:

BOOM!

Coach Is Away But No Time To Slack

 ENTRY 360

COACH IS AWAY, BUT NO TIME TO SLACK

Coach Brock is away this weekend, but that does  not mean 'The Brick' can rest.

I am working very hard on training. I want to end this year with a win.

I am also investing in some new boxing gear.
I will be visiting the Pickering/Ajax area on Wednesday to look for some new gear, and also to train at the Durham Boxing Academy.

Other than that, I have nothing else to report.

My next entry will be on Wednesday after returning from Ajax.
I'm sure at that time I will have a lot to say.

Remember Hamilton people, you can come to Mohawk College on December 10 to watch me compete on the 'Seasons Beatings' card.
More information on that even soon.

Upcoming Exhibition In Prep For the Seasons Beatings

 ENTRY 359

EXHIBITION MATCH: OCTOBER 28

So far, I do not have an opponent for October 28, but Brock is going to try to get me an exhibition match with a guy from his Ajax location.

I like doing exhibitions. There is no pressure or stress. It is really just sparring practice but with an audience.

After my exhibition, I will have two weeks of `rest` and then I will have to start training for my bout in Hamilton in the Heavyweight division.

SPARRING REPORT: WEDNESDAY

No sparring on Tuesday, but I did six rounds on Wednesday.

My current focus is still offense. Being busy, being first, and throwing more combinations.
I am also working on some `new`defensive moves that Brock taught me.

CHANGES IN TRAINING FOR THE SEASONS BEATING

I am still in regular training, and will remain so through until the second week of November. At that time I will go into pre-bout training for my bout verses Scott Turnbull at Mohawk College on December 10. The event is called 'Seasons Beatings'. Good name, but I wonder who will be getting the beating?

I have been doing a lot more double-ended ball practice and speed bag work.
I generally do 3-4 rounds per session on the double-ended ball, and two rounds on  the speed bag.

Another thing I have added to daily training is a few rounds on the stationary bike. This is in addition to the hour on the treadmill at Bloor Fitness.

I have found that with Brock's gym being a lot more spacious, I have more room to work. I find that I can do what I need to do to complete my training at a level that is satisfactory to both myself and the coach.

Next Wednesday, I will be visiting Brock's other gym in Ajax.
Since I will be in Pickering that day, I wall do a training session with Brock at the Durham Boxing Academy on Station Street in Ajax.

I am looking forward to that day.
It will be a day away from Toronto, and it is not often that I get to leave Toronto. At least not for a pleasure trip.
I have to say, I have never been to that part of Ontario before.

A big 'Hello'; to the people of Pickering/Ajax/Oshawa.
Look out. 'The Brick' will be invading your territory, soon!

In Pursuit of the Perfect Pair of Boxing Shoes

 ENTRY 357

IN PURSUIT OF THE PERFECT PAIR OF BOXING SHOES

Well, after over three years of almost daily use, my Rival boxing shoes are throwing in the towel.
The soles are coming lose, and I am afraid that it is going to become a safety issue.
I have sort of fixed them with Shoe Goo, but that is not really a permanent fix. It is time to admit that I need to pull out the wallet and fork out for another pair.

The thing with shoes is that I really do not like buying them off of the internet, for the obvious reason that you can not try them on.
However, I am comfortable to take a size 9 with Rival shoes.

I will look on the Rival Boxing web site to see what they have.
I have always liked Rival shoes

How about these? They are green!

Oh no. Size 9 is sold out.

How about these? These are nice too.

Oh. Size 9 is sold out, again.

Let me try the all black ones.

Really? This is becoming a WTF moment.

How about these? Nice silver ones. They are not high-top, but still nice.
Maybe I will get these instead.

Are you really serious about this crap right now?.

I see a disturbing trend here.

Are there any that are not sold out?

As I looked more, I found these Adidas on a U.S. web site.
I like the name of them, and Adidas is good.

Oh, wait.  No size 9, either.

However, this same shoe is available in stores in Canada for $89.
Well, I think.
They advertise that they have them, but I am not sure if they have a 9.

What the hell is it with size 9 anyway?

The problem is that we really don't have any boxing stores in this area.
I used to buy all my gear from Beatdown Sports on St. Clair Ave. West, but that location closed a while ago.
There was then a store in Hamilton called Fight Zone.
They lasted a whole year, if that.

The only thing left is Warriors Martial Arts on Yonge Street, and just like in true Yonge Street fashion, that store is ridiculously, unreasonably. and unnecessarily expensive.

Their shoes start at $145.

I am sorry, but anyone who pays more than $100 for shoes need to have their head examined.

So, I have decided to travel a bit.
If I can get a decent pair of shoes for $90, it is worth a bit of travel.

There is a store called Warrior Fight Store. They apparently have a decent selection of shoes for not so ridiculous prices.

However, it is located on Brock Street in Pickering.
The trip will take almost two hours each way.

I decided that I would go, and just make a day of it.
While I am out there, I might drop by the Durham Boxing Academy to check it out.
It is just odd that I am officially a member of the Durham Boxing Academy, but I have never been there.

It is not far from the store, once I have figured out how to navigate the Durham Region Transit system.

I think I will do that on next pay day.
New boxing shoes, and I may pick up some other things as well. Plus, I will get to visit the boxing gym that I belong to.

Wow.

All that in pursuit of the perfect pair of boxing shoes.
