'THE BRICK' PRESENTS ANOTHER (TWO) "NOT AT ALL BOXING RELATED BUT STILL INTERESTING" ARTICLE(S)

Canada Scores Low On Public Transit Scores

A U.S - based company called Walk Score conducts surveys on the "walkability" of major cities in North America and Australia, generally with population above 200,000.
They have a score specific for public transit.
The scores are based on surveys the company conducts with passengers in such cities. The questions are about frequency of service, reliability, and coverage, and so on.

A score above 80 is considered excellent public transit service.
60 - 80 is good service.
40 - 60 is considered 'some' public transit service.
Below 40 is considered poor service.

In the recent group of surveys conducted by the company, it is interesting to note that no city in Canada had a public transit score above 80.

Here is the run down:

Cities with the best public transit:
Toronto had the highest score for transit with a 78.
Montreal 77, and Vancouver was a 73.

The three worst cities for public transit:
Edmonton with a 44.
Calgary 43...
and bringing up the rear with an abysmal score of 42 is Hamilton.

Poor frequency of service, lack of coverage, and limited service hours were the main complains for poor service in Hamilton.

I have been in the unfortunate situation of having to take the bus in Hamilton. This survey is not that far off.

Uber Verses Taxi In Toronto, Is Uber Really That Much Less Expensive?

Speaking of walking, or NOT walking...

There has been a lot of controversy between Uber and taxis lately.
After doing some research, I found out something interesting.
Uber is not always less expensive.

Sometimes when the wife has a lot to carry from the store, she takes a taxi.
It is only a couple of blocks, but taxi fare is $4. Uber fare for the same distance has been quoted at $5.
In this case Uber fare is higher.
However, another example would be for me to go to work, which is 5.5 km. The average taxi fare would be $18.50. The average Uber fare would be $12.
To go from my apartment in Toronto to a specific point in Hamilton, about 100 km. The average taxi fare is $149. The average Uber fare is $70.
Lets take this to an extreme.
From Toronto to Montreal, 550 km, by taxi would cost $1120.
However, Uber would not provide a fare, because they do not go to Montreal.

An interesting note though is, why is it $149 to go 100 km, but over $1000 to go 550 km by taxi? What kind of math is that?
Even accounting for traffic, that is a big difference.

The best thing to take away from this study is that Uber is not always less expensive.
The difference between Uber and taxi is greater the farther you travel.
Oh, and Uber does not like Montreal, or maybe it is the other way around.

Interesting.
